Born in St. Louis, Nelson was playing professionally as a 15-year-old in 1947, working with the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra and the big bands of George Hudson and Nat Towles. In 1951 he was not only… Read more in Amazon's Oliver Nelson Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The Follow Up to Nelson's Brilliant Work Now In MLPS Format!, June 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: More Blues & The Abstract Truth (24bt) (Audio CD)
While I enjoyed "Blues and the Abstract Truth" which was a who's who in jazz greats playing great work starring Paul Chambers, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard and Roy Haynes better, this follow up is also a very enjoyable listen with a totally different lineup of less well known but highly competent musicians like Thad Jones and Daniel Moore on trumpets, Phil Woods on alto sax, Phil Bodner on tenor sax and English horn, Ben Webster on tenor sax, Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Roger Kellaway on piano, Richard Davis on bass and Grady Tate on drums. With such a large lineup you could be forgiven if you thought you were listening to an old style big band ala Basie or Ellington but although we get almost an orchestral-like setting the music here is very pleasant and delightful. This mini-lp replica sleeve (mlps) version is also a treat for fans having been very well designed and assembled and the sound has been well remastered for a good sound quality as well.

Well known in the 70s as the man who composed the theme to the hit television series "The Six Million Dollar Man" Nelson shows he is also a great arranger and conductor of jazz and does a fine job here in the sequel as he did with the jazz greats on the prequel.

A very enjoyable listen and a worthy addition to your jazz sonic library.
