Book Description

December 21, 2001
The first book by David Dicaire, Blues Singers: Biographies of 50 Legendary Artists of the Early 20th Century, (McFarland, 1999), included pioneers, innovators, superstars, and cult heroes of blues music born before 1940. This second work covers those born after 1940 who have continued the tradition.

This work has five sections, each with its own introduction. The first, Modern Acoustic Blues, covers artists that are major players on the acoustic blues scene of recent time, such as John Hammond, Jr. The second, Contemporary Chicago Blues, features artists of amplified, citified, gritty blues (Paul Butterfield and Melvin Taylor, among others). Section three, Modern American Electric Blues, includes some Texas blues singers such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmie Vaughan and examines how the blues have spread throughout the United States. Contemporary Blues Women are in section four. Section five, Blues Around the World, covers artists from four different continents and twelve different countries.

Each entry provides biographical and critical information on the artist, and a complete discography. A bibliography and supplemental discographies are also provided.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Purists no doubt have a hard time with the modern incarnation of the blues music. What once was an artistic catharsis for a repressed culture has become commercially known as a set of commonplace chords. Who's belting out that cover of "Little Red Rooster" is beside the point to author Dicaire; the important thing is that somebody still knows it and that the music is evolving. "In the end, the blues is still the blues," he says in the introduction to his second study of the music. While his first volume, Blues Singers, profiled blues musicians from before 1940, here he selects 50 blues artists born after 1940, from Son Seals to Jimi Hendrix and from the Vaughan brothers to the Netherlands's Hans Theessink. Dicaire tries to emphasize the blues' broken cultural barriers with chapters on contemporary blues women and blues artists around the world. He is obviously a fan of the music, and each biography is like an awards banquet toast made by an awestruck kid. Though not as deeply researched as Summer McStravick's recent Blues-Rock Explosion, Dicaire's book is an easier read, covers more than just a 1960s music fad, and explores the music's international impact. Recommended. Eric Hahn, Fargo, ND

I gave this as a gift to a dear friend who lives and sings the blues. He devoured it, cover to cover, in two days, and told me he learned great details of the lives of many blues singers. He rated it as excellent.
