5.0 out of 5 stars mmmmm delicious cake!!!
So glad they are finally on CD !! After seeing these gals on the Smothers Brothers' rebroadcast in the 90s, I found their first album. Their R&B covers were nice, but it's their original material that blew me away. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to be embarassed about!
I was a huge fan back in the 60's, but it occurred to me that there was a real chance all I would feel when listening to this CD was embarrassment. Well - I was pleasantly surprised. This is good! They really were a decent "blue-eyed soul" act!

Their R&B covers were nice, but it's their original material that blew me away. Why their record company didn't promote the medieval/hippie side of the band, I don't know, their original compositions, and the production is just beautiful. So happy so see both of their albums now on CD, with wonderful liner notes about the band. These girls are finally getting their much-needed resurgence (it is a shame Jeanette Jacobs is not around to enjoy it) to prove they really did make good music beyond their unusual appearances on a couple of 60s variety shows.

These girl group tracks are atmospheric and haunting in their 60's Gold Star studio production. The two lp's included here were originally on the Decca label. The English tinged vocals are girlish and smart at the same time. The harmonies of these voices radiate a sound supreme.
The Harold Battiste ( new Orleans session man and arranger producer to Sonny and Cher,Dr. John and many others)arrangements put this group above the other girl groups in sophistication and elegance. To get these 2 lps together in one creamy cd was an effort very worth the wait. They deserve to garner new listeners. This cd includes "The cake", and "Slice of the Cake",released in that order in their late 60's hey-day..
These lps came out in the late 60's when they didn't quite find the audience they deserved. The instrumentals are enchanting,in the Phil Spector school of sound. This compilation is a must have for girl-group and folk-rock enthusiasts. If you missed it the first time, get it today!!
I have listened to the vinyl for years. Thanks Revola and Chesea of the "Cake" for the treat.

One fun feature of this cd is Cher's distinctive background vocals on "baby it's me".They really are good!
However these three young ladies were a quality act in themselves!
I think "Extroverted Introvert" with it's creative drumming is my favorite. However these songs are meant to be heard together,as a continuous flow of creative sound.

the first 3 tracks are the only ones you need to hear, the rest is ehhh. that being said, those 3 are some of the best songs i've heard of the era, girl group wall of sound(alikes), that you will love, good to have around for when you want those tracks. i'd read about them for years and years, so glad i didn't get these 2 lps on vinyl and pay to transfer. great stuff is making the jump to cd these past like 3-4 years, if you know who you're looking for....
