Was this cropped from the original 1.66 to 1.78 or is does it display as 1.66 on 16:9 screens?
It seems most 1.66 & 1.85 films are being cropped to 1.78 for BluRay releases. 1.85 -> 1.78 removes some of the edges of the image, but 1.66 -> 1.78 removes more image from the top and bottom. I doubt that vertical scanning is used her to minimize the effect on the original image.
Criterion presents their licensed films in their original aspect ratios (with the exception of The Last Emperor, which has been altered by the cinematographer). The Double Life of Veronique is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.66:1, filling the entire vertical frame of a 16x9 television with slight pillarboxing on the sides.
