A Good Introduction, July 16, 2004
This review is from: More Dating Old Photographs (Paperback)
As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and "More Dating Old Photographs" would have to be considered an encyclopedia when it comes to dating and identifying old pictures. This is a very useful book for the social historian or the genealogist. By studying the actual 19th and early 20th century photographs in this book - and there are hundreds of pictures from the 1840's through the 1910's - one would have the ability to closely identify not only the era of the photo they may have in question, but, in doing so, may even discover who the mystery person in the photograph might be.
Halvor Moorshead has taken a very unique approach to this genre by pretty much letting the pictures do the talking.
But, there are some minuses to this, however. Even though there is a couple of pages in the front of the book helping to explain some details, I feel there should be more written information for those of us who are novices to period clothing and styles. I think maybe an introduction to each decade/chapter would've been a far greater help than just the photos.
But, don't let this stop you from purchasing this book. The photographs alone make it more than worth the money.
A great historical scrapbook.

Dating Old Pictures, May 23, 2009
This review is from: More Dating Old Photographs (Paperback)
As an historian I have found this book invaluable. This and its companion book are the only books like this in America.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, August 26, 2011
This review is from: More Dating Old Photographs (Paperback)
This is a must for not only genealogists but historians. Styles changed rapidly since the beginning of photography, and these photos from every decade speak louder than words. A great reference to use with dating old photographs.
