Reading Molly Fisk's "The More Difficult Beauty" gave me the odd sensation of falling down a well, but instead of into darkness, I fell into light. Fisk's words give us darkness and shadow, but these poems twist this into a kind of release, leaving the reader with a bittersweet, sobering hope. John Updike considers Fisk's current poetic offering a "Fearless, clear-eyed work."

This 96-page collection is organized in eight sections. Each section is titled with decisive, unambiguous words like "Sugar" "Light" and "Fire." This organization by tone gives the effect of micro collections within a connected, tightly themed work.

Lovely reflective poems, like Stinson, Sunset, are about place as much as the emotion associated with them. Other poems read like heart-stories responding to incest, womanhood, sex and the process of loving.

With "The More Difficult Beauty," Fisk takes us deeper into the fabric of life, to the unseen waft and weave, sometimes harsh to the hand yet rich with contrasts to feast the eye.

Beauty is something that proves harder to acquire as time rolls on. "The More Difficult Beauty" is a collection of poetry form Molly Fisk, as she reflects on the passage of time and how a woman's life alters over its course and changes radically for each stage of it. "The More Difficult Beauty" is a thoughtful read, recommended. "Sunset, Stinson": Especially the way thin layers of water/slide up the sand and take on the color/of endings - silver or pewter never/ocean blue -- and then recede into just/a little spent foam of a half-hearted/undertow according to the tide and/then again slide up, scattering the quick/feet of godwits and willets, their curved bills/plunging as the water slips down, toward/itself, easily, and is taken in.

Molly Fisk is a deep feeling person - about everything. And when she writes she puts her heart deeply into the words, which means she allows herself to be painfully vulnerable at the risk of wounding herself. But her words are truth, words that must be said, expressed, and they will reverberate in your soul long after you put the book down - truth just does that. I haven't yet read this one, but knowing her personally, being taught poetry by her, reading previous works of hers, all prepare me for the new experience of opening the pages of The More Difficult Beauty and diving into the world that exists there.

I know Molly's poetry and wit from her radio commentary. This is not her first book, but it is my favorite. Beautiful sense of what is real. I only like the poetry I like - and I like this!
