Editorial Reviews

2006 special collector's edition reissue for first time on CD. Includes a 16 page full color booklet and a 3,000 word essay including an interview with the younger Van Zant brother. Signed to Polydor in the UK and A&M in the US in 1980, he teamed with legendary producer and original Skynyrd A&R man Al Kooper to cut this blistering debut album. Drawing from his southern roots and Skynyrd's fiery guitar fuelled legacy, the music is a hot burrito of fuel injected riffing (aided and abetted by twin lead guitarists Robbie Gay and Eric Lundgren) and the kind of down home back porch rocking that brings to mind the best work of Skynyrd, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker and the Allman Brothers Band. Look out for 'Standing In The Darkness' a poignant and touching tribute originally written as a poem for late brother Ronnie, surely one of the finest closing tracks on any southern rock album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally! February 23, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I'm so glad that this album has finally been released on CD. This is the great debut album by the Johnny Van Zant Band, led by the younger brother of the great Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
This is where Johnny started years before he became the frontman of today's Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I must say that I am quite pleased with this album. We are given several great songs like "No More Dirty Deals", "Comin' Home", "Put My Trust In You", "Keep On Rollin'", and "Only The Strong Survive", which I think is my favorite track on the album (I've always wondered why it wasn't included on his greatest hits CD). All of the other songs are good as well.
The album comes with nice liner notes containing a long interview with Johnny Van Zant about his early days.
While it may not be as strong as his older brother's work, I find Johnny's work very enjoyable to listen to.
Now, when are we going to get "Round 2" and "Last Of The Wild Ones"?

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! July 1, 2008
Format:Audio CD
The first JVZ Band album finally on cd! I had this on vinyl when it was first released years ago. This is one of the best relatively unknown albums you will find. I love every song. Strongly recommended for any southern rock lovers or basically anyone who is into the ultimate (and unmatched) classic rock genre. Keep ROCK alive!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeaaaaah Boyeeeee! November 29, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I love this classic sounding material from Johnny, and glad to see it make it to CD in remastered glory. Would love to have modern classic rock stations start spinning this excellent material today - it was sadly overlooked.

This is the first Johnny Van Zant cd I purchased shortly after it came out. I actually bought it on vinyl. I too have been hoping for this release. I have not heard these sweet tunes for many years. July 13, 2006 will now hold a special place in my heart, the release date of No More Diry Deals.
