A fitting representation of modern reggae,

Dancehall (or dub as we call it in Trinidad) reggae has almost always presented a frustrating dichotomy for progressive thinkers. There is a fierce independence and, more and more often, a decrying of the violence that has bled Jamaica so awfully since the late 1970's. Much dancehall has evolved into critiques of the consumerism that another part of it celebrates. There is a knowledge and appreciation of self to be found on tracks by many artists although few do it as eloquently as Mutabaruka. Another side of dancehall often rears its ugly head in almost obsessive gay-bashing and the exploitation and denigration of women many artists seemingly trying to prove their heterosexuality through the transformation of women into things-to-use-for-sex-which-I-am-very-good-at. Capleton hits both sides of the river on More Fire. Only the CEO's of Glock and Browning could possibly take offense to the theme of "Jah Jah City". That track shows Capleton at his finest spitting poetry against the gunman and the arbitrariness of the violence in Jamaica. On other tracks he buries himself in religious fervor as on "Who Dem", where a surprising percentage of the world's populace feels the ire of God while Selassie watches, ostensibly for dissing His Imperial Majesty, Emmanuel, and/or Marcus Garvey. It's telling of the contradictions involved in all Judeo-Christians religions that immediately following that track comes a joint emphasizing Capleton's prowess between the bed sheets as an adulterer. "Good in Her Clothes" is one of the album's catchiest tracks. A driving rhythm makes for fine wining while Capleton's vocal style is spectacular. On the track he ranges from a surprising vibrato during the chorus to the raspious most animalistic recitation of lyrics probably ever recorded. It's a measure of his passion for the art that he puts so much of his vocal chords into the song. The production on many of the tracks leaves a bit to be desired. Few bring anything innovative to the table.Capleton is certainly one of reggae's top talents but he has a long ways to go before he reaches the likes of Sizzla who continues to amaze both lyrically and musically. In the meantime, Mr. Bailey continues to entertain with his wit and exasperate with his intolerance and chauvinism.

This time last year, you could not have convinced me that Buju Banton's "Til Shiloh" was not the bes reggae album I had ever heard. Fast forward to now, when I just purchased Capleton's "More Fire," a sure classic. This is what I believe to be the best album he has made, and I thought I'd never like anything he did more than his 1995 album "Prophecy." I was definately left asking, no begging for "More Fire."

My wife and I were on a trip to Montego Bay a few years back when I asked one of the local guys to give me a tip on the current hot reggae. He pointed me to Capelton and Buju Banton. I went to a downtown mo-bay CD store and selected a few cds including More Fire and headed back to the hotel. Later in the day I asked the DJ to put More Fire on to see what it was like and the place exploded with the locals all dancing and grooving to these tracks. It was an instant hit for me listening and watching the groovin that was occuring. It is hard core but positive. I now own all of his CDs and eagerly await his next release or a chance to see him live!

MORE FIRE - Capleton,
By Andrew L. F. Muirhead (Chicago, IL.) - See all my reviews

The reggae album MORE FIRE finds Capleton at his best! This album solidifies Capleton as today's version of Bob Marley; he is prophetic, preaches against injustice and immoralities (Track 17: Pure Sodom). Capleton tells us that the righteous will triumph over Bablyon (Track 3: The More Dem Try). Capleton, a.k.a. The Prophet, knows that we live amongst danger, but it is a battlefield on which we can win against the wicked (Track 2: Danger Zone).MORE FIRE finds Capleton remaining positive by uplifting women. On track 14 (Hands Off), Capleton disses men who seek to disrespect women. Of course, Capleton has some words for his critics (Track 11: Critics). On MORE FIRE there are various riddims, like Bellyas (Track 5: Who Dem?), Dirty Money (Track 7: More Prophet), and Street Sweeper (Track 12: Final Assassin).

Hey, this CD has already been rated one of the best reggae CDs of 2000. Why? Because Capleton's lyrics are deep, and thought-provoking. And they blend perfectly with the riddims. Just check the song "Hunt You" and "More Fire." In all of Capleton's albums I've noticed he has a way with words and he writes his own lyrics or co-writes them (check the credits). He's all about inspiration with his words and been in the reggae-game for a while. But I hope they come out with a different version of Capleton's greatest hits (don't buy that CD)- because a lot of his hottest songs are missing on there. "Still Blazin" (2002) is hot too (I'd give that 3 and half outta 4). But "More Fire" is one of Capleton's best! Beenie man can't touch this brotha-- Yo! Capleton will mash him up with the the consciousness of his lyrics and the firm meditation!! Beenie-man is blending too much with American-Pop! Capleton-- keeps it real.
