Book Description

April 14, 2010

Tackling the problems plaguing the U.S. health-care system, this accessible guide explores the pitfalls of contemporary medicine and medical treatments, concentrating on diseases linked to poor lifestyle choices, such as obesity and diabetes. While much of the health-care industry is centered on a blanket approach that addresses a general disease instead of the person affected by it, this guide suggests that personalization is the key to good health. It asserts that patients who make physical, emotional, and spiritual lifestyle changes to improve their diets, exercise regimens, and stress levels can help alleviate problems caused by lifestyle illnesses.

More About the Author

Dr. Peter Weiss is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. While serving in the U.S. Navy, he trained in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases becoming Board Certified in both fields. After his Naval commitment he entered the private practice of infectious disease in Melbourne, Florida. Later he was named Medical Director and then CEO of Health First Health Plans, which, during his tenure, was one of the nation's top health plans according to the US News and World Report/National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) rankings.

Over his career it gradually became clear to Dr. Weiss that traditional healthcare, even in the best medical centers, wasn't resulting in improved health or wellness for most Americans. In his words, "I realized that the greatest burden of illness in our members was directly related to their lifestyles, and that more or better care wasn't going to help most of them. Thereafter, I became committed to helping individuals change their lives, improve their health and avoid illness in the first place."

Feeling this call to action, Dr. Weiss wrote "More Health, Less Care" hoping to give readers useful insights and tools to manage their own health. With it's publication, he left his leading role in traditional healthcare to become a "Wellness Evangelist" - speaking, writing, coaching and otherwise helping ordinary people to gain control of their own health.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Health, Less Care delivers valuable information April 24, 2010
Format:Paperback
I highly recommend More Health, Less Care. It delivers valuable information in a clear, concise format with excellent examples.

Dr. Weiss guides readers from the shortfalls of our traditional healthcare system to an innovative approach to healthcare. It is geared to where we are today. We can be our own best advocates if we just know how. More Health, Less Care tells us how. The introduction sums up this book the best when Dr. Weiss writes, "...the principles outlined in this book provide a general philosophy of problem-solving and self-improvement that can be applied to any condition, problem or situation in your life where you desire a positive change." It truly tells us how to take charge of our medical care and how to write our own personal prescription for lifelong health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! April 26, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book, although brief and simply written, inspired me to look at my current personal health status. That in itself was important. What really impressed me was the way that Dr. Weiss helped me see that our health care system is not a wellness system. If I want to be and stay well, I have to change the way I am thinking. What a sensible approach.

I recommend this book to all my family and friends who want to take more responsibility of their health future.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important message for us all July 17, 2010
Format:Paperback
This book is relevant to everyone and whatever your level of health you will find that reading More Health Less Care will give you the inspiration and encouragement you need to take even better care of yourself. You will discover that you are far from powerless when it comes to taking control of your health and that improvement is always possible and worthwhile.

In his timely message, Dr Weiss also invites us to think outside the box for our healthcare solutions, to engage in new and fulfilling health enhancing behaviours and to embrace the idea that it is our personal responsibility to take the best care of ourselves; doing whatever is necessary to avoid getting sick in the first place. When you read this book you will find a new desire awakening within you, the desire to experience a deeper level of wellness and a renewed motivation for good health. Who doesn't want that?
