4.0 out of 5 stars another sweet kurland book
One of my favorite books of all time is Lynn Kurland's This is All I Ask. One of my least favorite books ever is Kurland's Another Chance to Dream. While The More I See You doesn't match the poignancy and feeling of the former, it (thankfully) doesn't drown the reader in bleakness like the latter, and I found it an enjoyable read, with lots of wit and tender moments...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best time- travel I've ever read
Although Kurland has a quriky, comical style that is a lot of fun to read, The Hero just didn't do it for me. He was so rude and surly that I found it impossible to like him. The heroine wasn't much better, making stupid decisions that left you wondering "what was she thinking".

Jessica Blakely is a successful composer and musician who yearns for the magic of love. At the moment, unfortunately, she is stuck in England, wearing medieval clothes for a party at a castle, and accompanied by a dull suitor who wants to be her knight in shining armor. Literally. Wishing upon a star to find her a man who loves her, Jessica's walk around the castle lands her in the 13th century, startling both her and the party of men who want the "fairie" dead on the spot.

One of the men is Richard de Galtres, a dark and brooding knight who saves Jessica from the rest of the group. Despite Jessica's strange accent and speech, the men end up believing that she is related to the King. They think she is babbling incoherently because she hit her head when she fainted, so they take her back to Burwyck-on-the-Sea, Richard's ancestral home. Once there, Jessica and Richard begin to get on each other's nerves, and much to their respective dismay, a mutual attraction begins to grow.

While Jessica adjusts to life without 20th-century comforts, she begins to appreciate the man hidden underneath Richard's gruff exterior; the discoveries she makes about his past help put some of the pieces of the puzzle together, and she finds herself yearning for a mere smile from him. For Richard, the endlessly annoying woman who claims to be from another time becomes a necessity to him, which he realizes when he nearly loses her to a traitor's blade. As he tries desperately to close her wound with a red-hot knife, the only way to take Jessica's mind off the pain is to distract her with the betrothal ceremony. Although this results in the couple's being bound by law, they are nonetheless unsure of the other's feelings.

There is a lot of humor in this book. Jessica starts off unwilling to compromise on her notions of modern behavior and can get a little too cutesy with her American slang, but she means well, and in the end, she gets exactly what she deserves: A man who adores her, even though he might not understand everything about her.

Richard, could have been your typical, brooding, tortured hero. Instead he is a likeable wounded soul - Kurland can write those like few authors can - and he very slowly and very carefully begins to accept that this is the woman who has conquered his heart.

Characters from other Kurland books make their appearance here, one even meets his demise, but if you've read Stardust of Yesterday, you know that everything turns out well in the end - I only wish Richard and Jessica had known as well. If you're in the mood for a (mostly) light read with lots of humor, you might want to try The More I See You.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed reading this book, December 13, 1999
By
I have read most of the books in this series and have found that Ms. Kurland has either hit or missed with no real in-betweens. I've felt the last few books have missed, and actually wondered if she wrote them, because they seemed so different than her first books. Richard and Jessica's story was well written, with strong characters, and an interesting relationship that continues to grow throughout the book. I feel that this book is mostly about Richard, his "issues" and how he deals with them. Although Jessica is our time traveler, and she is an integral key in opening Richard up, this is not her story.

It helps that there are other time travelers in the plot, but as with most time travel books, I found that our non-traveler believes our traveler too easily. Richard has his doubts, but they are rather quickly abated. Jessica does not behave like a Medieval woman, and is very knowledgeable, but that in itself should not be enough motivation to believe.

All in all, I might have liked a little more detail on lifestyles in 13th century England, but there is enough to make the story interesting. Jessica brings her modern language as well as her modern thoughts, and this makes for some amusing anecdotes. Enjoy this as a solid, fun book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of her best books., December 27, 1999

I absolutely loved this book. The characters were well developed and the storyline was great. I loved how the author addressed the physical and emotional abuse Richard went through as a child and how Jessica had to heal his soul before they could truely be happy. Because I read so often it is very rare for me to feel emotion for the characters but this book did it to me. Buy the book and become part of the story. It is definately a keeper. Also read "Stardust of Yesterday." That book had me laughing out loud and the part where Kendrick gives his love a ring made me cry (my husband now thinks I'm a loon). Happy reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Romantic Comedy, December 27, 1999
By A Customer
This is the first book of Lynn Kurland's I've ever read, and I was impressed with the lightheartedness and humor her characters possess. I thought the time travel theory was a little farfetched, but hey, it's supposed to be I guess. I loved the heroine, Jessica Blakely in this novel. I must admit that at first she kind of annoyed me, but by the end of the book I was wishing for more of her sharp wit and commentary. I also loved the hero, Richard. He was the perfect match for Jessica, and it was great fun to see their romance evolve into something wonderful. I like the fact that these two characters grew within the novel and changed into better people. Jessica wasn't as reliant on material things and was more self sufficient and stronger than when the book began. Richard, even more so, by becoming more open to the idea that women weren't just to fulfill the needs of men. The one thing I didn't like about this book was the villain. I tended to skip the parts when Richard's brother Hugh was taking over the chapter. They seemed like obnoxious interruptions into Jessica and Richard's story.

5.0 out of 5 stars MESMORIZING, BEAUTIFUL, A LASTING IMPRESSION!, November 10, 1999
By A Customer
This is the first book I have ever purchased by Ms. Kurland and quite frankly, I couldn't put it down! I was captured instantly by the bright, beautiful, and bold Jessica Blakely and intrigued by the harsh Richard de Galtres. The characters were so beautifully woven into a complex and thoughtful plot, full of surprises, laughter, and tears. The twist from the very beginning involving time travel really hit the mark on my romance factor. All of us, at some time, wish to escape...all of us at some point wish for a man with chivalry. This is possibly the best book I have read in a very long time. Excellent job, Ms. Kurland!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beguiling love story that will leave you breathless, July 23, 2006
By
Neilisa (Tulsa, OK United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
Jessica Blakely is a lonely girl. A musical prodigy, Jessica spent most of her life honing her craft without much of thought of anything else. Years later, she is living in New York and enjoying a very successful career in music, but her success is not without cost, which is her love life. Since Jessica had very little experience in dating, she became the unwilling victim of numerous blind dates, set up by many of her well-intentioned friends. One of these blind dates leads to a trip to England when the story opens.

On a beautiful evening filled with stars, Jessica takes a stroll in the park as she ponders her life. In a moment of spontaneity, she makes a wish upon a star and suddenly finds herself swept back in time to the year 1260 and about to be set upon by a pack of hounds.

Richard is a damaged soul. He's a fierce warrior who struggles to forget the cruel abuse he had to endure as a child at the hands of his father. Richard is convinced that his father has long stamped out any good that may have existed in his heart...until he meets Jessica. Rather, rescues her from being mauled by the hounds.

The story of Richard and Jessica is so poignant, their love almost palpable. You'll sigh over and over again as they struggle to overcome their fears in order to love each other, as well as fight to keep each other safe from forces that threaten to tear them apart.

This was such an enchanting book to read. Lynn Kurland's gift with words is beyond compare. When you delve into one of her books, the inexorable draw of her words entices you into the story and holds you captive, until you feel the heart-wrenching pain of love torn asunder as well as the expanding tightness in your chest and also tears as her hero and heroine find one another. To put it succinctly, her books will make your toes curl.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very little bit less than perfect 10.0, November 8, 2001
Don't get me wrong. I really love this book. It's the best romance novel I've ever read and ever finished!! (I'm not really into this type of book). The story line is simple but attractive. A modern american girl who wished upon the star to be loved by a knight in a shining armor and then.. woops! she time-travelled to medieval England and fell in love with a moody, male chavinist Richard of Burwyck-on-the-sea who's truly a gentleman with a heart-warming sensation to the only woman he loved.. This book is really entertaining and can put a smile on your face while reading it. Their relationship grew over time and, unlike the other romance novel, two main characters did not fall in love in the other external appearance but the true beauty within. One thing that makes this book a little less (really tiny little bit...)than perfect 10.0 is the wrap up at the end. Well, it's not bad but just.. a little..(very very little) bit less interesting... But by over all, highly recommended!! and you will
love it just as I do..

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly enchanting tale, January 1, 2008
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Absolutely loved this book. Couldn't put it down once I got started. Loved the tenderness between the H/H.

Richard is a tortured soul, after the abuses he suffered as a child from his father.
He rescues Jessica from danger who unknowningly has landed herself in the 13th century, after wishing upon a star.

In Richard, the lonely Jessica finds her soulmate. But it takes Richard much longer to respond. He belives he has a heart of stone, and no soft feelings, so he keeps away from Jessica. As he gets to know her, he comes to love her and to trust her with his heart.
He also realises she's telling the truth that she's from the future and not spouting inane nonsense when she knocked her head from fainting. And he knows too that he could lose her once again.

This is a heart-wrenching tale, with a gut-wrenching ending when they are torn apart. make sure tissues are handy for this one.
Thank God they do have their HEA.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good story with some rough patches..., October 21, 2006
This is the story of a man who is trying to start a new life and a woman who's tired of the one she's got. Fortunately, time-travel is possible in the world of fantasy, so they get to build a new life together.

This book explores the gradual changes in understanding and emotion between Richard and Jessica pretty well. I felt that it was a bit slow in a few places, but not enough to ruin the story. Many readers absolutely love this story, though. I think it's more of a personal preference thing that depends on each person's preferred type of hero and storyline.

In addition... Kendrick shows up here as a good friend of Richard. So in a way, this book has the lead-up to Kendrick's story (Stardust of Yesterday). So all of the Kendrick fans out there can't miss this one!

Give it a try... you might be one of those that love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Loaned to Me, April 19, 2006
A co-worker loaned me this book and told me it was a good read. The premise of the story is that a woman makes a wish and is transported back to the 13th century, where she meets Lord Richard. The two of them fall in love despite their attempts to hate each other. I thought the book was well-written and entertaining escapist reading -- except I felt the end was a little contrived.
