Joe sings & the Jones-Lewis Band swings!!,
By Movieman (New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: One More for My Baby (Audio CD)
This album is 47 minutes of pure bliss by Joe Williams and the Jones-Lewis big band produced by Sonny Lester. Highlights are 'Hallelujah I Love Her So', 'Nobody Knows The Way I Feel this Morning' etc.The whole CD is a winner, with top arrangements by a band stacked with star soloists and is highly recommended to those who want a truly great collection of songs from the late, great blues master.

Pleasant and interesting but flawed compilation,

This review is from: One More for My Baby (MP3 Download)
This recording (I'm referring to the MP3 download version) is billed as Joe Williams with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, but potential buyers should be alert to the fact that only four tracks actually employ the Jones/Lewis Jazz Orchestra, and those four are available on the much-preferred Blue Note release "Presenting Joe Williams and Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra" (BLUE NOTE CDP 7243 8 30454 2 6). The remaining tracks appear to be lifted from another Sonny Lester production from the period, a Joe Williams album titled "Something Old, New, and Blue". The only credit I have found for this music lists Thad Jones as arranger/conductor, but no reference to the Jones/Lewis organization itself. The four tracks that intersect with the Blue Note album mentioned above are plagued by frequent dropouts, as if this compilation was derived from deteriorated tape source material. The remaining tracks (while better sonically, they sound like they were dubbed from a vinyl copy) find Williams and company (whoever they are) in a decidedly more pop/easy listening vein. Thad Jones' arrangements here feature smaller ensembles that include strings, vibes, guitar, and (yikes) organ, settings more characteristic of pop vocal recordings of the period, rather than the distinctive charts Jones fashioned for his Monday Night Orchestra with Mel Lewis. People looking for the Jones/Lewis Jazz Orchestra would be better served by the Blue Note album I mentioned earlier (as of this writing still available on Amazon). That being said, it's hard not to love this...warts and all. Joe Williams does it right every time, regardless of the setting.
