An altered state, is just what it says-a different way of existing, of seeing and feeling. It's an existence other than from your usual frames of reference. For many people, an altered state-whether achieved through drugs, alcohol, meditation, or sex-is a vacation from the self. That can be the ordinary moral self, or the intellectual, the workaday world, the baggage of interpersonal relationships. We seek out altered states to get away from who we are.

An altered state of sexual being allows us to exist outside of ourselves sexually. In its pure form, an altered state is not a fantasy. It isn't even an orgasm. It is simply an altered dimension of sexual being. But as such, it can be an overwhelmingly satisfying, fulfilling experience. (Chapter 9, "Altered States")

5.0 out of 5 stars Every male who masturbates should read this book!, February 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: More Joy: An Advanced Guide to Solo Sex (Paperback)
In both the Joy of Solo Sex and its sequel More Joy, Dr.Litten drags this taboo subject out of the closet. He quotes many authors, some of them medical experts. He says, in effect, "Look, we all do it, we all like doing it, and we're not about to stop, so let's stop being hypocrites about it." He quotes at length from readers of his newsletter about their unabashed enthusiasm for self-pleasuring. Not reserved for gay men, unmarried men, and horny teenagers, the truth is out that all men masturbate, a lot more often than was previously thought! And Dr. Litten says," Good for them!" All manner of techniques are discussed, safe, and questionable. He brings up the curiosity that all men seem to have about other men's genitals and self-pleasuring practices, and how sharing masturbation with a friend does not make one gay.

The book is directed toward men, but not just to gay men. Dr. Litten coins the term "solosexual" for those who truly prefer themselves to a partner, saying it is only a matter of degree since most people experience the majority of their orgasms from masturbation anyway.

A factual, no-nonsense approach by "The world's leading apostle of auto-erotism."

3.0 out of 5 stars Going solo, December 21, 2006
This review is from: More Joy: An Advanced Guide to Solo Sex (Paperback)
If you're interested in Harold Litten's subject matter and books, this is the one to read. I feel it overcame some of the limitations of his first book, "Joy of Solo Sex," which was criticized by some who strictly wanted a book of techniques.

This book covers the topic in a more accessible way, but be aware that it really does seem to be targeted at gay men. Some straight men would be offended by it. It's not every day you see a book on this topic, and Harold Litten truly is the guru of male self-pleasure.

I also liked this better than his "fantasies" book, which is not for the faint of heart (seems like some fantasies should stay in one's head and not be committed to print).

Though "More Joy" is not erotica, many readers will find it hotly exciting--especially to read about a subject you don't see much about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madame Palm and her Five Lovely Daughters, August 22, 2001
This review is from: More Joy: An Advanced Guide to Solo Sex (Paperback)
It's just one climax after another and I had to keep going to find out what would happen in the end. I wasn't disappointed - I just could not it put down. A real eye-opener from beginning to end. I'm typing this one-handed.
