Undeniably this book is filled with laugh-inducing tall tales, riddles, jokes, and stories. However, identifying a distinct Appalachian orientation to many of the pieces is difficult, if not impossible. It seems that many are universal, that is, peculiar to America. Some of the jokes that have a definite hill-country focus on language or accents may be seen by some as ridicule more than down-home humor. An enjoyable, funny book, but not necessarily a fount of Appalachian folklore. Denise Perry Donavin
