Format: Audio CD
The second full-length release from the Jason Parker Quartet finds the hardest-working band in Seattle in fine-form on a complimentary selection of tunes that showcases the group's dynamic and playful sound. The selections - ranging from the original composition "Bashert" to a gorgeous rendition of Duke Pearson's "Idle Moments" to a arrangement of the Nick Drake song "Three Hours" - are all excellent vehicles for the band's collective energy and combo playing, and provide plenty of showcase opportunities for each player. Evan Flory-Barnes on bass and D'Vonne Lewis on drums provide plenty of momentum, but also effortlessly interact with each other and the soloists with that near-telepathatic language that only comes to players with a zillion hours together on bandstands. Parker's horn is always tasteful and tasty, pulling the right notes out of the air in crisp, musical bursts. The excellent saxophonist Cynthia Mullis joins the group for the some of the finest moments on the record - could a Jason Parker Quintet record be far behind? Here's hoping!
