Book Description

Mary Mccarthy Prize in Short Fiction December 1, 2005

[A] haunting novel. . . . This book brims with the poetry of the working class, seldom sung lyrics of working men and women.—from the introduction by Larry Woiwode

“Shepherd is a master craftsman, and the subtlety of his art, the unassuming elegance of its architecture, rendered me spellbound and finally grateful. I don’t think I shall ever forget this fine book, its honest, guileless voice leading me along into the fire.”—Bob Shacochis

“A riveting exploration of what it is to be an outsider even in your own head. Shepherd has written a gripping story of childhood angst—psychologically thrilling, lyrically exact.”—Janet Burroway

Levi Revel is a boy in danger of losing his family and maybe his mind. He’s in awe of his father, Everest, a majestic dreamer, a master builder, a man with a violent, secret past. As the family moves from state to state, Levi hears solace in the voice of God, a voice that sends him preaching from treetops and roofs.

But the family begins to fall apart, and as Levi enters adolescence, he hears more troubling things: other voices, terrifying sounds, warnings. When Everest takes him on a high-speed, cross-country chase to win back Levi’s mother—by force if necessary—Levi realizes how much danger they all are in.

Tender and frightening, this debut novel takes readers across America, through the eyes and ears of a child whose family is haunted by a past they can’t outrun. From a boy lost in a world of imaginary voices and chilling destruction to a young man who can rebuild steeples, the story Levi tells is the triumph of persistence over moments of isolation and despair.

Paul Shepherd lives in Tallahassee, Florida.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Levi Revel's family moves to Michigan after the adolescent's father, Everest, gets drummed out of the army (but with an honorable discharge) for unspecified acts of violence that haunt the family. Everest has big plans to build a house; Levi is learning from him how to do it. But Everest's inability to understand his bank loan eventually leads to a financial disaster that forces the father to flee—after deliberately damaging the house. Everest lands in Florida, with the family following in his wake, and begins another disastrous project. Wife Nora then takes off, Everest places daughter Carson with her Michigan grandparents, and Levi becomes seriously troubled: he hears voices; he begins preaching. Levi's close but disturbing relationship with Everest forms the backbone of the novel, Shepherd's debut. By the harrowing final chapters, where Everest takes Levi on a cross-country drive to Seattle and tries to track down his wife, Shepherd has carefully worked over themes of running away and of perseverance (often, through Levi, in Christian terms). The narrative has some choppy moments, and mother and daughter remain vague as characters, but Shepherd's family-in-decline frames an impressive father-son character study. (Dec.)

From Booklist

*Starred Review* All his life, Levi Revel has heard things. No matter where his restless, angry father moves the family--and he moves them constantly, almost as if he were running away from something too shameful to share--the 12-year-old hears the voices in his head and in his skin; they come from the rafters, through the walls, from near at hand and far away. Sometimes they sound like his father; sometimes, like God. But since Levi worships his carpenter father, it's sometimes hard for him to distinguish between the two, even when his father's behavior becomes increasingly erratic . . . And dangerous. Winner of the Mary McCarthy Prize, this extraordinary first novel about the blood ties that bind fathers and sons packs such emotional power that reading it is like sustaining repeated blows to the heart. And, appropriately, for a novel about voices, the first-person voice of narrator Levi is exquisitely and unforgettably rendered as the boy recounts his search for self and the redemption of silence. 5.0 out of 5 stars A dream of a read, December 1, 2005

This review is from: More Like Not Running Away: A Novel (Mary Mccarthy Prize in Short Fiction) (Paperback)
I was completely swept away by this book. The voice is so smooth, and the characters so endearing, I found myself going along for the ride. The way the novel enters a child's point of view, and you see Levi's absorption of his father's values (doing things well, building a strong house, not shirking work or duty) as well as sheltering (and sometimes shuddering from) his father's overwhelming, almost epic, temperment, created an all too realistic picture of the vulnerable imprint of parent to child, as well as the ways in which economic hardship wreaks its own damage on families. In the same way the movie My Life as a House explored the connection between intact home and family, this book takes you through intimate domestic territory while it opens you up to stunning vistas from rooftops to the blank slate of the open road. A great book about fathers and sons, about belief, about will, about money and honor, and about the quiet heroism of simply being there when no one else has the fortitude to do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary McCarthy Prize Well Deserved, July 25, 2006
This review is from: More Like Not Running Away: A Novel (Mary Mccarthy Prize in Short Fiction) (Paperback)
Despite being an avid reader, this is the first time I have been moved to post a review on Amazon which in itself says something. To put it succinctly, this is a wonderful first novel and it makes me wonder what the author will do for an encore. Unlike some modern fiction, there is a plot to "More Like Not Running Away" (which I won't reveal here) and Mr. Shepherd's love of architecture and the art of building a house/home are evident throughout but what got me most of all was the sheer beauty of the language. It all flows, not a word or phrase out of place, no jarring or discordant notes (other than those intended by the author). Some other reviewers have used the words "poetic", "lyrical", "elegant" and "graceful" to describe the writing -- they all apply in spades. At the risk of costing the author some sales, though not particularly long this is not a quick beach read but a book to be savored without hurrying. You won't regret the time spent. I even found the ending remarkably uplifting and affirmative of life in an unexpected way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo !, December 23, 2006
This review is from: More Like Not Running Away: A Novel (Mary Mccarthy Prize in Short Fiction) (Paperback)
Having read this book, I can assure you that your only regret will be reaching the final page. These are characters you will never forget. Moments in this book will remain with me forever, such as Levi driving with his Father. Like the others who reviewed this novel, I cannot wait to see where Paul Shepherd will take us next.
