Book Description

October 4, 2008 1568987587 978-1568987583 1
The allure of mobile, portable architecture is worldwide and centuries old. From the desert tents of the Bedouin to thesilvery capsules of the Airstream trailer, mobile architecture has inspired designers with its singular characteristics of lightness, transience, and practicality. In More Mobile, the follow-up to her groundbreaking 2002 book Mobile, Jennifer Siegal explores the ever-growing range of possibilities of portable, demountable structures. From serious Refuge Wear to the playful Bar Rectum and the practical Kunsthallen, More Mobile explores the working methods and finished work of the most exciting contemporary designers and presents today's most dynamic, active mobile structures in beautiful color images, detailed drawings, and thoughtful text. Contributors include Studio-Orta, Dré Wapenaar, Andrea Zittel, Andrew Maynard, Andreas Vogler, Horden Cherry Lee Architects, N55, Atelier Bow-Wow, Mark Fisher Studio, MMW, LOT-EK, and the Office of Mobile Design. A foreword by Jude Stewart discusses life on the move, while an introduction by William J. Mitchell considers the house as a robot in which to live.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small is good for people and the planet July 5, 2012

This a great book on smart small design, most of the buildings have good photo's and descriptions. A few of the concepts are a bit out there but its good to push the boundaries and challenge what is a good space. Overall I enjoyed the book and am starting to think much smaller in terms of spaces that we design and even built a couple of small 'rooms' that are enjoyable spaces. Well done!

3.0 out of 5 stars More Mobile, More Boring? January 8, 2011

Don't get me wrong, I like mobile architecture and the idea of portability that is embedded into many of these works. However, i find that much of the work is just a rehash of previous ideas.Ideas from the Japanese movement metabolism and the avant garde Archigram are slightly modified and sold as the designer's own work. With that said, i realize that much of today's architecture is influenced by those designs of the yesteryears but i just felt that there were too many similarities and not enough innovation.

Inside the book pictures of projects are presented but some are more emphasized more than others. Plans and sections are sparingly included but that in and of itself does not deter the understanding of the project. The works are then categorized by the firm/designer. The layout is simple: one page for the description of the project/designer and the other for pictures. I do feel that more could be said about the projects as much of the description doesn't really go in depth.

There is the passing thought that most of the works are chosen flippantly just to compile a collection that could be published in a book and i do believe that this is true for this book. Bluntly stated, there are repeats of the same idea (i.e. tent structure, portable cities). However, the point that i believe to be significant is why these works, even though they are disparately similar, are presented here as something worthwhile to look at in a collection of mobile architecture. The answer clearly alludes to the notion of site and construction as they comes into play. So while i did get some brain food from this book, i felt that it was a weak effort to present portable architecture in a way that is really unique.
