This review is from: More Mr. Nice Guy (Audio CD)
I was introduced to Garaj Mahal by Pandora Radio with the song Mondo Garaj. I was blown away and immediately bought all of the Garaj Mahal albums. However, although I love all of their work, I didn't think that anything quite measured up to the Garaj Mahal album (keep in mind that they had set a very high bar with their debut studio album). Now, I am very pleased to say, Garaj Mahal has outdone itself at last. More Mr. Nice Guy is a fabulous addition to my music library. It seems to have a heavier jazz influence and a richer sound than their prior work. The piano plays a much heavier role in several tracks, which offers some great variety. I also love the addition of vocals on a few tracks (so much soul!), which is something they managed to do without detracting from the groovy instrumental heart of their music. As a drummer, I'm particularly drawn to Sean Rickman's work. He delivers a show-stopping performance in his debut with the band. I must say that I absolutely love the snare sound he laid down...the ghost notes are so crisp and tasty. In this style of music it's common for the drummer to go into thrashing solo mode with complete disregard for the music. However, Sean manages to perform mind-numbing beats and fills without overbearing the music. Tasty is the word I can't get out of my mind...so very tasty. There is so much talent in this group; I can't believe I'm the first one to write a review for this album! More Mr. Nice Guy is a must have for anyone with enough sense to know that the world of music has more to offer us than Pop, Hip-Hop, and R&B. It's a fusion of all the great musical styles performed by some of the best in the business. If a band member happens to read this review, I would love to see you guys in the Dallas area!
