4.0 out of 5 stars Its a Mancini but not that Mancini!
A second series disc on the same material is always a dangerous project for an artist. The strong reference of the first original Peter Gunn album made expectations on this too high. This is a Mancini but not as brilliant a Mancini as the first Gunn. I have both and oh, I have also the soundtrack for Peter Gunn, the film. But I am a big fan of The Man. If its to be your...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the TV soundtrack
Caution. The previous reviewer may be confusing this album with the original Peter Gunn TV soundtrack recording which is due to be released in June, 99. The number "The Brothers Go to Mothers" appears on the soundtrack album but not on this one. If his review does refer to the soundtrack album, I unreservedly agree with him; it's a great recording of big band...

If its to be your first Mancini, I suggest you prefer the original which is also here @ Amazon. Ave Mancini.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Music is more diverse, August 6, 1999
By
This review is from: More Music From Peter Gunn (Audio CD)
I can't imagine owning the original Peter Gunn soundtrack without having this one also. More Music is more diverse, containing the exciting "Blue Steel," the Duane Eddy-like "Spook," & winsome cuts like "Walkin' Bass." "Little Man Theme," & "Goofin at the Coffeehouse." Featured players include Shelly Manne, Pete Candoli & Plas Johnson. & a big band that includes four - count em - French horns.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sonn of Gunn, June 4, 2000
By
This review is from: More Music From Peter Gunn (Audio CD)
This CD contains all tracks from the original "More Music from Peter Gunn" Soundtrack LP. It includes 5 additional redundant or unrelated Mancini tracks. The music here is every bit as good as in the first Peter Gunn volume. The two Peter Gunn albums plus the Mr. Lucky album make a trilogy of cool TV detective music from late 50's television.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good album, but not nearly as good as the first Peter Gunn, December 29, 1999

Compared to the first album, it's more of the same, with tunes not good enough for the first.

That said, I recommend it. Those who have never heard the first album will enjoy this one very much.

One of the best light jazz albums ever. Mancini was the greatest composer of "light and breezy" jazz. Don't miss this for your collection!

Proof is right here. After half a century, Mancini's music is still fresh, driving, and beautiful, miles above anything that is being written or played today.

Mancini was also a bit adventurous in his orchestra, which included french horns and he was one of the first to use alto flutes in jazz to brilliant effect.

Blue Steel, Little Man Theme, all are memorable jazz. I watched Peter Gunn when it first went on TV. I was 10 years old and loved the show and it turned me into a life long fan of jazz.

My 33 rpm record may be obsolete, but the music on it isn't!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best "Cool" Big Band Jazz Album of all Time!, February 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: More Music From Peter Gunn (Audio CD)
This "classic" jazz album is the coolist of the cool. LA's best musicians colaborate with one of the greatest writers of the 20th century to create a masterpiece.

The "ad lib" solo's alone are worth the price of this album.

This writer's favorite tune from Peter Gunn is "The Brother's Go To Mothers".

...you'll hear some things here you didn't on the first album.

As classic as "Peter Gunn" was, there are still some things, such as the great "Timothy," that didn'd get recorded until the second season.

"Timothy" still amazes me with its jazz breaks - especially the trumpet solos. Once you hear it you'll understand. And "Odd Ball," also on this album, is simply like nothing else Mancini ever recorded, before it or since.

Like it or not, you have to buy this CD. The good news: this production contains some bonus tracks, especially the great "Experiment in Terror," soundtrack from the Glenn Ford movie of the same name.
