More of the Whispers!,
By A. Lawson (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: More of the Night (Audio CD)
Known for their smooth soul ballads throughout much of the '60s, '70s, and '80s, the Whispers turned out a surprising release in '90, displaying their desire to change with the times, and remain one of the premiere r&b groups to ever grace the stage. For all intents and purposes, they succeeded by careful balancing new jack swing and the usual smooth soul into a superb release in the summer of '90. All of the smooth soul tracks are memorable, as "is it good to you" and "my heart, your heart" have become quiet storm regulars. However, my favorite track has to be "mind blowing". Its midtempo groove accompanied by the whispers cohesive harmony and memorable chrous makes it an irresistible listen. The other notable track is "more of the night". It is much in the realm of "mind blowing", but has an unconvincing hook. As for new jack, the lead single "innocent" shot up the charts and rose to #3 r&b. Other than the single, no other new jack tune made an impression, save for the remix of "innocent" at the close of the album. Its quite distinguished from the original and is the saving grace of the new jack portion. Also, not to be forgotten is the rap part in "babes". It is quite clever and shows the versatility of the Whispers, even in their 4th decade of recording! Unknowningly, this album was their last commercially successful, as subsequent releases in the '90s all bombed. Even though their run as a force in r&b has ended, their longevity and music will never be forgotten. Overall, i gave it a 4 because of the star quality smooth soul cuts and one distinctive new jack cut. One more convincing new jack cut would have earned it a 5. Nevertheless, there are many memorable tunes on this release and is a great purchase. Therefore, it is essential for smooth soul followers and die-hard new jack fans.

I still love this album today!,

I still love the Whispers' "More of the Night!" This was a great album all the way through. I love the ballads, but all the dance songs were hot! How Innocent leads into the very street Girl Don't Make Me Wait and later weaves into the beat heavy new-jack Misunderstanding! A triple threat from them within three songs! I think that this album was their best one since their '79 album that had "And The Beat Goes On." For the ballads, I love the smooth title song and the very romantic "You Are The One" I also like "Mind Blowing", "My Heart Your Heart" and "Is It Good To You", whose six minutes are far better than the radio ready four minute single. This album had singles peak at 3, 4, 7, and that one song that started at 58, then later plunged down the chart. They would never chart that high after '90 and '91. This is such a fine piece of work from the group and deserves to be recognized more. Their willingness to record with young producers for this album justifies their willingness to stay current and contemporary. That's why I still listen to this album sometimes--it's still addictive every time I hear it, even some 14 years later!!!!!

More of the Best From One of the Best,

After departing Solar Records, the Whispers showed no signs of slowing down, especially with this brilliant masterpiece. With the hits "Innocent," "My Heart Your Heart," and "Is It Good To You," instantly turning this disc gold, it proves again that true talent forever stays on top.

Truly Mindbowing!,
This review is from: More of the Night (Audio CD)
For a long time now I had been trying to remember the name of that Whispers album that blew my mind way back in the very early 90s. Now I know. Thanks to the Amazon.Com search engine! Once you start playing this CD it just takes you away to a land filled with bliss. This album sits comfortably at the apogee of The Whispers bests selections. "More of the night" is too much to be an opener. You just expect too much from the rest of the album. But then songs like "Mind Blowing","You are the one", "I want 2B the 1 4U", "Forever Lover", "Don't be late for love", "Innocent" ,etc.; just reassure you that The Whispers are not in the rank of the one-song-album musicians that we have these days. The album ranks amongst my all time Top Ten albums. You can bet that it is way up there on my Amazon.Com Wish list!

This isn't their best work, but the whispers haven't made a bad one yet. The slow jams here are working.

This album is dedicated to all the connoisseurs of fine wine and dine music. It contains an even share of sounds for the bedroom and the dance floor. Strictly for hardcore Soul/R&B fans. You wont be disappointed, i guarantee it! There is no absolute point for me to defend the songs and the vocals presented on this album, let your ears and your soul be the judge!

...and the results are superb. Satiny harmonies with Walter & Scottie's trade-off lead vocals. They call it 'Grown Folk Music' Watch out for My Heart is Your Heart, Mindblowing and the title track. Enjoy with some chilled wine and your favorite snuggle-up person.
