5.0 out of 5 stars The best single volume on grammar, January 28, 2003

Better organized and more comprehensive than even the popular _Transitive Vampire_ series or _Woe Is I_, this second book by Josephson and Fine is whimsical and easy to use. It's packed with humorous examples that are current and uncontrived. This is the only book I've found to cover some of the finer points that have always bothered or confused me--such as when British convention differs from that in America. Indispensable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grammarians Without Rancor, March 9, 2003

There has never been a friendlier invitation to master English usage basics than Nitty-Gritty Grammar until its new companion, More Nitty-Gritty Grammar. I recommend them for all my community college students. Not in the ivory tower crowd, authors Fine and Josephson are, however, astute observers of language ills and, if laughter is the best medicine, most-palatable healers. Their topics are relevant, their well-researched explanations straightforward, their examples fresh and funny. My students agree.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Response from Northern Minnesota, January 26, 2003

On this cold, winter day in January, I'm reading More Nitty Gritty Grammar. Who would have thought that a grammar book could be entertaining? Edith Fine and Judith Josephson have found the perfect formula. Similar to their first book, Nitty Gritty Grammar, this one is organized in an appealing, accessible way. I actually enjoyed testing my grammar skills with the quiz. Their compilation of nationally-syndicated cartoons addressing grammar issues adds visual interest and levity. They explain the rules, state the exceptions, and give plenty of examples. It's an excellent resource guide for yourself or for a friend. I highly recommend it.

This is THE ONLY grammar book I can fully recommend to my adult writing students who attend my popular online classes through Education to Go and at the university. As the author of more than 60 books, including Shovel It: Nature's Health Plan and the creativity journal, Writeriffic, I know the importance of learning the "rules of the road." The authors have done a smashing job explaining them all and with style. It's definitely a thumbs up. Yes, it IS a fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean up Your Messiest Grammar Mistakes, January 16, 2003

Fine and Josephson, the funny gals who brought us Nitty-Gritty Grammar Guide are back! When I saw their new book, More Nitty-Gritty Grammar, I snatched it from the bookstore shelf before some other English teacher could elbow her way in. More Nitty-Gritty Grammar wrestles the most challenging grammar problems to the mat. My seventh grade students and I have benefitted often from the authors' clear, concise explanations. We like the cartoons too! I whole-heartedly recommend More Nitty-Gritty Grammar to anyone who wishes to become a caretaker of the English language. Join the movement!

More Nitty-Gritty Grammar and its predecessor, Nitty-Gritty Grammar, are simply terrific! The team of Fine and Josephson have created a duo of books which gently teach an elusive subject and yet entertain the reader.

Imagine a book with a CNN-style scroll at the bottom of each page. Follow the scroll and learn something new in grammar or refresh yourself on something half forgotten since high school. Then, viola!, the scroll also gives the reader a page reference to read more.

Go a step further. Check out the cartoons (good ones like Baby Blues and Heathcliff) for more grammar pointers. Who woulda thunk it? Cartoonists as grammarians!! Wonderful!

Fine and Josephson make their points without insulting the student nor overburdening the teacher. Nitty-Gritty is well organized and well explained. I have used these books very successfully in tutoring adults. A recent forty-five year old student, Cheryl, remarked she followed her book's CNN ticker in her text and "couldn't get enough of it." I agree with Cheryl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Check this out before you write!, January 7, 2002

This review is from: More Nitty-Gritty Grammar (Paperback)
You're writing an email to your wife to let her know you're making a quick stop on the way home. "I'm stopping off at Tiffany's and Jason's on the way home to deliver a couple of gifts to let them know how special the two of them are," you type. "I shouldn't be very late." You punch "Send" and your note is on its way. When you arrive home you wonder why you get such a frosty reception. "Just how special IS Tiffany?" your wife snarls. When she finally lets you in the door and thaws enough to explain, you dash to the computer to check the email you sent, which clearly indicates you were going to stop at Tiffany's house and then at Jason's house. You give yourself a smack on the forehead. You should have checked MORE NITTY-GRITTY-GRAMMAR before you wrote. Then you would have typed, "I'm going to stop at Tiffany and Jason's..." This would have indicated there was only one house that belonged to both of them, not two individual houses. Now you're in trouble, and all because you didn't know how to indicate joint ownership instead of individual ownership. Next time you'll make certain to check MORE NITTY-GRITTY GRAMMAR. After all, it's a painless, very enjoyable way to learn the nitty-gritty and ins and outs of grammar. And then you won't have to sleep in the bathtub.

This easy to read grammar book fit the bill for me when I needed to brush up on some basic rules quickly for an exam. There are plenty of examples to help cement each concept and the authors also use comic strips to emphasize each point. I highly recommend this book the anyone who wants to learn how to write a paper correctly.
