About the Author

Ethel Pochocki described herself as "an ordinary person" who happened to "make soup and raise kids and write stories." Both kitchencraft and the experience of raising children--eight of them, now grown up--contributed to a whimsical, down-to-earth and understanding touch that caused her stories to make ready friends. Ethel Pochocki wrote books, tales and articles for both children and adults. Though born in Bayonne, New Jersey, she lived for many years in Maine, where she concocted adventures with the ordinary but vivid ingredients of life--"books, cats, music, frogs, hollyhocks." Out of her lifelong insight into the way facts mix with fancy and heaven mingles with earth, came Once Upon a Time Saints and More Once Upon a Time Saints. Ethel Pochocki died on December 1, 2010 at the age of 85.

This book is a compendium of brief lives of the saints told in the manner of fairy tales. The approach has the advantage of capturing and holding the attention of young readers (it did mine). The author is an excellent storyteller and in a marvelous way is able to capture the spirit and personality of each individual saint. No child who reads this book will ever hold the stereotype of saints as pious bores!

Lives of the Saints books are common to many Catholics, but this book adds a delightful twist by telling the stories in the manner of fairy tales. My children have enjoyed them immensely although the dividing line between real and legend is sometimes hard to tell.

What a great book for explore the world of saints. My children really enjoy reading about all the different saints.
