Follow-up to Popular Title Instructs, Less Humorously,
By
This review is from: More POINTS SCHMOINTS! (Hardcover)
Marty Bergen's follow-up to his justly popular "Points Schmoints" (imaginatively titled "MORE Points Schmoints") expands on the principles outlined in the earlier volume. Unfortunately, it lacks some of the sparkle and zip of that first effort. One wonders if the author himself did not suspect this; a short introduction detailing three years of football watching and general procrastination before tackling the sequel comes off as something of a mea culpa. Rest assured that much valuable information is here and many Bridge conventions only touched on in "Points Schmoints" are explored in detail now. For players still learning the fine points of the game (like this reviewer), this volume is an invaluable tool for understanding what stands behind such names as Jordan, Drury, Puppet Stayman, etc, and is a fine primer in the art of playing them. Sadly, the clever interweaving of literary and actual anecdotes that punctuated the lessons of the first book feel forced and contrived here. Some of the humorous lines are even recycled verbatim from "Points Schmoints." While Bergen's lessons are as relevant as ever, when compared with the scintillating earlier effort, the reader of "More Points Schmoints" can't help but come away feeling just a little disappointed.

Good beginner/low intermediate level book,

Its wasn't as good as Points Schmoints but was still good.
I did not like the fact that the author reused some of the same hands. For the cost of the book, he can be original enough to come up with 15 new hands.
