Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4—This lighthearted companion to Katz's Pocket Poems (Dutton, 2004) features 27 selections by a variety of favorite poets. From spring to winter there is an air of excitement and sense of anticipation as each new season dawns, holding the promise of fresh pleasures. Playful watercolor illustrations capture the joyous spirit of the poems, most of which have catchy rhymes. This appealing anthology is sure to capture the imagination of even the most reluctant readers.—Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

From Booklist

A sequel to Pocket Poems (2004), this brightly illustrated anthology presents 44 short poems for children. The first selection, “Put the World in Your Pocket” (one of 4 by Katz), sets up the volume’s thematic arrangement by season, cycling from spring to winter. Other writers represented include Eve Merriam, Emily Dickinson, Alan Benjamin, Langston Hughes, Arnold Lobel, Myra Cohn Livingston, Betsy Franco, Aileen Fisher, Jack Prelutsky, and John Ciardi. Lively, upbeat paintings illustrate each verse. One or two poems appear on every page, and each poem is individually illustrated. Though that might sound like a potential jumble of pictures, similar colors and forms unite the images on each double-page spread. As the anthologist’s appended note states, this is a good resource for teachers celebrating “Poem in Your Pocket Day” and a nice bridge between Mother Goose rhymes and “big kid” poetry. Like its predecessor, this attractive collection of light verse lends itself well to reading aloud. Grades K-3. --Carolyn Phelan

This book is the sequel to the charming anthology, "Pocket Poems." On April 30th of this month, New York City is celebrating their seventh Poem in Your Pocket Day. Everyone is asked to join in the excitement and carry a poem in their pocket. There are many seasonal poems to choose from in this book. Many classic poems and writers are included with a smattering of the newer poets such as Paul B. Janeczko, a man who never thought he would ever be a poet. A few of the poets included are Emily Dickinson, Jorges Torres, Bobbi Katz, Ogden Nash, Benjamin Franklin and many others.

Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver
liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.

-Langston Hughes (from April Rain Song)

In this delightful book there is a poem for every season and every youngster who would like a poem for their pocket. The watercolor illustrations are simple and compliment, but don't overwhelm the text. These short rhythmical poems would be fun to memorize and even more fun to copy and tuck away in a pocket. This is the perfect book to celebrate the month of April, National Poetry Month!
