Book Description

February 1, 1998
Open a new world of communication

Children have a lot to say, whether through gestures, movements, pictures or words. American Sign Language incorporates all of these natural skills, and Cindy Wheeler's book, using helpful hints and picture clues, makes these signs accessible to even the youngest child. To make the sign for tiger, show the stripes on his face, or for please, rub your heart. More Simple Signs introduces 29 words from a young child's everyday life. And the hand sign alphabet is included on the endpapers for children ready for the extra challenge.

"The result is a broader understanding: children don't simply learn a few words in a new languages; they learn that there's a completely different world of communication". -- Booklist for Simple Signs

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2?An approachable, easy-to-understand book about sign language. Words such as "play," "yellow," and "girl" are presented on single pages with cheery full-color illustrations as well as smaller black-and-white line drawings of a child demonstrating the sign. Thus, frogs on lily pads appear on the page for "green" and a smiling youngster signs the color. The slim text consists of hints for making and remembering the sign. The sign for "girl," for example, mimics tying the strings of a bonnet, and the sign for "stop" shows hands formed like a barrier. This will be a popular addition for most collections.?Christine A. From Booklist

Gr. 1^-4. From the author/illustrator of Simple Signs (1995) comes another introductory picture book about sign language. Each page introduces a new word chosen from vocabulary that young children might actually use, such as sun, play, girl, sit, yellow, apple, yes, stop, monkey, and fish. A watercolor painting illustrates the object, action, or idea, while an ink drawing shows a child demonstrating the hand position and motion for the sign. Simple and pleasant in its design, this book will serve as an attractive resource for beginning students of sign language. Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

Cindy grew up in the beautiful Appalachian mountains of North Carolina, on a mountain top surrounded many mornings by valley fog. The summer skies were blue, the autumn a palette of vibrant color, the winters ice-cold blue and white, the springs full of life, hope and flowers. Her younger years were spent in a living landscape painting. The love of light and landscapes, whether east coast, west coast or around the globe, comes from a lifetime passion for nature and its moods.

Her professional artistic career began with a BFA degree in Graphic Arts from Auburn University. She subsequently moved on to illustrating and writing children's books professionally for Random House, Viking/Penguin, Alfred A. Knopf, and other major publishers in New York City for 20 years. Her books can still be found on Amazon.com under author Cindy Wheeler.

In 2001, she moved to Marin County in California and began to learn how to translate her artistic background into her newest passion, landscape painting. She fell in love with the golden hills at sunset and the dramatic coastline, Point Reyes, Drake's Bay, Mt. Tamalpais, Bolinas Lagoon, Monterey, San Juan Bautista Valley, the topics for many of her paintings.

In October 2006 she left for South Africa to work as a volunteer with a Cheetah Conservation group, called Cheetah Outreach www.cheetah.co.za/. She reluctantly returned to the USA after 6 months in love with cheetahs and Africa. After spending a summer in the mountains of North Carolina, working at a girls' summer camp, teaching conservation and nature, she returned to California. She is now living in San Juan Bautista, CA, just north of beautiful Monterey, helping to care for 5 aging leopards - 2 snow leopards and 3 clouded leopards. She spends her mornings feeding leopards, and her afternoons working as a remote graphic designer for a company in Mill Valley, CA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book of practical words for everyday use, October 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: More Simple Signs (Hardcover)
This book like its companion book "Simple Signs" was designed for the everyday person. Both books contain signs needed on a daily basis and is a wonderful first book of signs. The diagrams and explanations of how to do the sign are first rate and easy to understand and the illustrations are beautiful. I can not say enough about these books except to thank Cindy Wheeler for understanding her audience so well.

I really like this book. The pictures are beautiful and the signs are very clear. I wanted something very simple to show
the children at school and this is both simple and self explanitory. Each picture is followed by another picture showing the action and then there is a "hint" explaining hand positions and movement. I think the children at my school are going to love this book.

This review is from: More Simple Signs (Hardcover)
This book is a must have to teach young children sign language that is meaningful and easy to learn. I have used all the signs in this book to teach kindergarten students how to speak without words. It is easy to show the kids the signs because of the clear instructions on each page.
