Editorial Reviews

More Smooth Jazz and Sweet Sweet Jams. Instantly making you think truck-stop compilations with sun-soaked covers of a loving couple in daisy fields and track listings that were taken from LITE FM's drive time. Two seconds in there's nothing dreamily gauzy about Terry Anderson and the Olympic Ass-Kickin Team. Propelling the tales is the sweet sweet sweetest musical intersection of the holy trio of power pop, bar-rock and what they called 'alt-country.' It's a festival of unlimited hooks - I'm Your Radio, the breeziest tune ever made by Terry and the OAK Team, is a metaphor of all metaphors. Take the claim at face value and imagine a world where the Team is on your iTune's speed dial - ''I'm the what you want to hear/I'm music to your ears'' - ready to blast you out of that flowery meadow and drop you in the closest bar.

This is without a doubt the best album I've heard yet from Terry & the OAKT. That is at least partly due to the production values; bassist Jack Cornell, who produced and mixed the recording, has found a way to bring more crunch to the guitars, giving this a heavier, fuller sound than their previous outings. To my ears, this is a good thing. Greg Rice's keyboards are right where they need to be, underpinning the band's hallmark sweet vocal harmonies. Dave Bartholomew's tasty guitar work seems so effortless, you may miss just how perfect it is for every song. Guest guitars from Will Anderson and Alyn Love and some fiery harmonica from Rod Abernathy add to the sonic perfection here. And of course Terry's hook-heavy, witty songwriting, heartfelt vocals and hard-hitting drumming are what drive the ensemble to new heights. Comparisons of their earlier albums to Dave Edmunds and Rockpile still hold; I also hear some echoes of Tom Petty and Muswell Hillbillies-era Kinks. Be warned: this album may leave you grinnin' so hard that your mouth hurts by the end of it; that's what it did to me.
