Format: Audio CD
This is Hank Crawford's first album as a 'leader'. He, and the entire personnel on this record came from, and was still in, the Ray Charles band. As they did with Ray Charles, they formed a very tight 8-piece band, here. Hank's alto, along with Dave 'Fathead'(?) Newman's tenor, Leroy 'Hog' Cooper's baritone, Philip Guilbeau's trump-
et, John Hunt's fleugel horn, Edgar Willis on bass, and Milt Turner on drums.

The opener is James Moody's "Boo's Tune",a sharp ol' bebop theme that brings out brief but excellent solos from the four horns, led by Phil, Dave, John and Leroy, who, then set the stage for Hank. Of PARTICULAR note, here, is the background work, by the four horns, behind Hank, which builds to an exit theme. "Angel Eyes" is next, and while it has been sung by masters like King Cole and Sinatra, Hank Crawford "OWNS" it. It is here that he proves to be the uncontested master of the instrumental blues ballad. Supported mainly by only bass, Hank's improv is absolutely beautiful, here, and on Errol Garner's "Misty", the other ballad. "Four-Five-Six" is by Hank, whose alto is not heard here, but his piano is. This is a cool come-on to a hard-swinging monster, that's got big Leroy (all 300 lbs.) and his baritone smokin' out in front of some serious horn support, and Hank, compin' his ..... off.

"The Story", which I think is also Moody's, opens side two. The arrangement is brilliantly handled by what sould be be a much bigger band, but these guys are perfectly capable of pulling off anything. It sounds like it comes right out of a stage show, with beautiful work by the horns, especially the brass (Phil and John). The solos are brief, but excellent, with everyone supporting everyone. Hank sneaks in two alto solos.

This was a very impressive major label debut on Atlantic for the young Hank Crawford. Some familiar covers ("Dat Dere" and "Misty") along with some clever original material. Boppin' and groovin' and yes ... very soulful. I love the sound, the tone, the touch that Crawford has on sax, and these arrangments are well executed; skillfully played and passionately played. Not a dull moment on this disc.

Hank Crawford was one of the more talented sax virtuosos of our time. He seems to have been inspired by the great Charlie 'Bird' Parker and stepped out into some great innovative areas during his career.
