Book Description

0195053648 978-0195053647 November 17, 1988 Uxg
Arguing that the 1964 edition of Eugene O'Neill's unfinished play More Stately Mansions, prepared after the playwright's death, was missing a substantial amount of material that O'Neill intended for inclusion, Martha Bower here presents an entirely new edition of the play with this material--dialogue, character description, an entire scene, the epilogue, and large parts of other scenes--restored. Published to coincide with the centennial of O'Neill's birth, it will stand as an important contribution to O'Neill scholarship.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Valuable in studying O'Neill's revision of the scripts and indispensable in O'Neill criticism."--Choice

"Bower makes a very convincing case that the 1964 edition is not the play O'Neill wrote in numerous and significant respects. I have no doubt that this new edition of More Stately Mansions will make a significant contribution to the study of O'Neill and of modern American drama."--Jackson Bryer, University of Maryland

4.0 out of 5 stars This is Library of America version, November 12, 2010
This review is from: More Stately Mansions: The Unexpurgated Edition (Hardcover)
The Library of America prints this version of MORE STATELY MANSIONS in the third volume of its Complete O'Neill. You can get that three-volume set, including all of O'Neill's plays, for a tiny bit less than the price of this play alone here, or you can pay one-third the price of this book for The Library of America's O'Neill Volume 3, containing this play and all O'Neill's other late plays as well, from AH, WILDERNESS through A TOUCH OF THE POET to A MOON FOR THE MISBEGOTTEN, including THE ICEMAN COMETH and LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT.

And, I repeat, The Library of America Volume 3 prints this version, not any other shorter or "expurgated" version, of MORE STATELY MANSIONS.
