5.0 out of 5 stars and I thought the North Mississippi All Stars were great
A few weeks ago the North Mississippi All Stars gave me one of the most intense musical experiences of my life in a small venue in Philadelphia. So I decided to check out Mark Selby and Kenny Wayne Shepherd when they appeared at a much larger venue this week. Mark Selby convinced me that I really have been a fool for ignoring blues-rock ever since my friends in college...

3.0 out of 5 stars A talented Singer Songwriter
Mark Selby is a talented singer songwriter, with a rocking attitude to boot. I saw him (and equally talented wife-partner Tia "Hope You Dance" Sillers) a couple years back and was taken by his easy command of guitar and nice touch with song structure.

He is best known for is collaborations with Kenny Wayne Sheppard instant blues-rock classic "BLUE ON BLACK"...

A few weeks ago the North Mississippi All Stars gave me one of the most intense musical experiences of my life in a small venue in Philadelphia. So I decided to check out Mark Selby and Kenny Wayne Shepherd when they appeared at a much larger venue this week. Mark Selby convinced me that I really have been a fool for ignoring blues-rock ever since my friends in college failed to turn me on to the Alman Brothers. I bought this CD from Mark during the break after his set. I was amazed that with a house full of Kenny Wayne Shepherd fans, hardly anyone was paying attention to the guy who wrote so many of his hits. But the real treat was the next night when I listened to More Storms Comin' while driving home from a very disappointing performance by two bands that were in my preferred style of pop-rock. This is a fantastic CD. Listening to the North Mississippi All Stars CD makes me wonder why I found their live performance so compelling. Listening to More Storms Comin' makes me wonder why Mark Selby is so under-appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic From the First Note, September 29, 2000
By
This review is from: More Storms Comin' (Audio CD)
Mark Selby may have gained notariety writing songs for others like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the Dixie Chicks, but this CD shows that Mark deserves a spotlight all his own. More Storms Comin' contains songs in the great blues styles from classic acoustic to rocking blues in the traditions of Stevie Ray Vaughn and ZZ Top. Mark creates visual images and communicates feelings in every song. Mark creates upbeat fun in songs like "Don't You Throw That Mojo On Me" and "What Am I Doin'", and shares a great deal of depth with the acoustic "Down By The Tracks" and "Blind Since Birth". One of the few CD's you can own where you will want to play it over and over and over. A true classic from the first note. P.S. Don't miss him live!

If your main priority is guitar solos, than this may not be for you. It has some great solos but is mainly about great songs. This would be a gratest hits package where it anyone else. For Mark Selby "GREAT" seems to be the standard he starts from. On most of my better blues CD's any of these songs would be a standout. The fact that I regard most of the songs on my favourite blues CD's as good to great should tell you how brilliant this lot is. Not one song that wouldn't have HIT written all over it were it recorded by a main stream act. Although this isn't strictly blues it will satisfy even the most critical blues fan with a miriad of new treatments of some well worn blues grooves and stylings. Somehow Mark always manages to make it sound fresh and exciting. Even his nod to the old time blues artists "BLIND SINCE BIRTH" would have done any of the old legends proud had they penned it..
You'll sing along to each song after 2/3 listens. VERY CATCHY

I discovered Mark Selby last fall when he opened for the Kenny Wayne Shepherd band here in town, and immediately decided I had to have his CD. At the time I had no idea that he wrote for KWSB, but his performance was absolutely incredible - I'm not even sure how to put it in words. The only thing I was dissapointed in was that his live performance was MUCH better than the CD - the music on the CD almost sounds like he's holding back in comparison to what I heard the first time. Even with that said though, this guy rocks. Buy it. :)

IF YOU LIKE THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA INFLUENCES IN BANDS LIKE LYNYRD SKYNYRD AND BLACKFOOT AND EVEN ACOUSTIC GREGG ALLMAN YOU'RE GOING TO BE CRYING FOR JOY AFTER HEARING THIS ALBUM TWICE. SOUTHERN BLUES -NOTHING BEATS IT. I HEAR A LITTLE BIT OF GARY ROSSINGTON AND RICKY MEDLOCKE STYLINGS. THERE ARE AT LEAST 3 NATIONAL STEEL ACOUSTIC SONGS-ALL VERY GOOD. I THINK WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS ANOTHER CASE OF A GREAT NEW ARTIST HAVING A STELLAR DEBUT ALBUM. IF THIS IS YOU'RE STYLE OF MUSIC YOU KNOW IT IS VERY RARE TO FIND NEW MATERIAL AND ARTISTS. ENJOY!

5.0 out of 5 stars Selby's got his Mojo working, October 6, 2000

If you've ever been one of the lucky ones to see Mark Selby live, you'll know that this album captures him in full force. High energy, driving blues/rock guitar. Accessible melodies, uncluttered arrangements, nothing to get in the way of the musicianship - Selby's music gets better with each listening. He is solidly backed by Chuck Fields on drums. With percussion so crisp it crackles, it's easy to see why Fields is one of the most sought after drummers in Nashville.

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer Blues-Rock, December 23, 2002

A drummer friend of mine shared this with me and I was instantly hooked. Fresh, high quality blues-rock through and through. I keep changing my mind about which song on this CD is my favorite. Selby can rock, but he gets some soulful grooves going that are flat out infectious. If you are a blues-rock fan buy this CD - youll be telling your friends about it. I've heard some of the songs on his new CD coming out in January ("Dirt") and they are great! The music world needs more blues rock and Selby's the man.

It's good to see that rock is not completely dead. Best new rock/blues artist since Tommy Castro, and in fact the album is better than all of castro's. Not a bad cut on the album, excellant vocals and guitar and the band is tight. Reese Wynans, good stuff.

I've purchased blues CD's for years and never have I heard such good quality from an up and comming artist as I have heard here. From beginning to end this CD has it all. The comparison to Blackfoot is accurate on certain songs, in fact Shorty MedLocke's harmonica is about the only thing that could improve this fine music. I already am looking forward to his next release. Where have you been hiding all this time Mark???
