5.0 out of 5 stars helping women everywhere
I love this book because it addresses such a diverse group of women. Undergraduate women, young professionals, stay at home mothers, working mothers, retirees and all types in between can relate to this book as the stories are those of intelligent women making choices and figuring out what success is and how to achieve it "on their own terms".

3.0 out of 5 stars A little one-sided, but ok
I had to prepare a presentation for a client and used this book as a research tool. As I read it, I realized that it was a very small target reader: very high powered, driven woman. A soccer mom isn't going to read this; a non-college educated woman isn't going to read this; or someone with a serious or chronic illness isn't going to read this. I fall into categories 2...

This books has inspired me personally. I have read and re-read it as I try to make my own life decisions. It is comforting to read this book and be reminded that I am not alone in my struggle to 'figure things out'.

I have not found a woman yet who cannot relate to this book and the amazing stories within it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ambition, Inspiration, Motivation- It's All Here, April 17, 2006
This review is from: More Than 85 Broads: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success - On Their Own Terms: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success -- On Their Own Terms (Hardcover)
Congratulations to all the women highlighted in "More Than 85 Broads." Your success is inspirational and heart-warming. Reading your stories gave me an opportunity to "try on" the choices you've made in life, and to assess if those choices could "fit" for me. I wish you the best of luck as you write your sequels.

This book is a MUST READ for anyone (male or female) who is:
* Ambitious: the stories showcase that ANYTHING can be achieved with a good dose of passion

* Interested in Networking: it contains great examples of the benefits of networking and how to go about it

* In Undergraduate/Graduate School: it's informative about the career opportunities available on Wall Street, the corporate world, the nonprofit realm, and beyond

* At a Crossroads in Life: many of the women highlighted faced difficult choices, and created unique solutions that worked for them

* Faced with Balancing a Career and Family (either currently, or in the future): it presents a variety of ways that ambitious caregivers have found satisfaction and fulfillment

Although the book highlights the success of individuals, and of the 85 Broads network, its real focus is on you, the reader. It is impossible to read this book without being positively affected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this one!, April 6, 2006
This review is from: More Than 85 Broads: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success - On Their Own Terms: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success -- On Their Own Terms (Hardcover)
I agree with all the reviews! This book is AMAZING. As someone working on Wall Street and attending business school in the future, I am always curious as to what happens to women who start out on Wall Street or attend business school. Do they remain in the financial services and move up the ranks? Do they climb Mount Everest? Do they take what financial skillset they've acquired and teach other women financial literacy in places like Pakistan? Can they balance family and career? The paths of over 90 truly inspirational women are charted out in this book and their lives are told in their own words. This is an opportunity to learn about the different life paths women take, how they chose the trajectories they did, who their role models were and are, and where they see themselves in the future. This book is a must. It is mandatory reading for any woman interested in following her own passion and defining success on her own terms.

I really had no idea what to expect when I read this masterfully compiled series of stories. An Apache helicopter pilot, a hedge fund manager, a world-class rower, a serial entrepreneur, etc. These women stepped into some incredibly challenging professional and personal situations, and whether the outcome was win, lose or draw -- they emerged with their ambition and self-esteem intact. A book to which all women AND MEN can relate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and inspiring stories ..a great read, April 16, 2006
This review is from: More Than 85 Broads: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success - On Their Own Terms: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success -- On Their Own Terms (Hardcover)
I loved reading about how very smart and very successful women think! Reading about how other women approach their work lives and how they define success has been riveting. Any one about to embark on a career path should not miss knowing these women's stories. "The most powerful and courageous voice any of us can listen to is our own, but it is often the one that we spend the least time cultivating and tuning into..." writes Hanson. Reading the stories of how these women did, will inspire how you think about work and the endless possibilities for a successful life. It is also very good company for anyone mid-career and making choices....I go back to certain chapters often.....a great graduation gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars When you are ready to quit, read this book. You'll be re-energized., April 10, 2006

A ten! Reading the stories of these women is so moving. From the military women to the survivors, you can't help but think, if these women can overcome, so can I. you would never think someone as successful and accomplished as Janet Hanson would ever have a doubt about herself or her abilities. she is remarkably candid about her own struggles and opens up the reader to a side of her many never see. the stories of each woman are distinct in their challenges but the overriding theme is one of perseverance and strength of character. I loved this book and found it to be very inspirational. I applaud Janet for profiling these women. Looking forward to the next book already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo Janet!, April 8, 2006
This review is from: More Than 85 Broads: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success - On Their Own Terms: Women Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success -- On Their Own Terms (Hardcover)
This book is for women, for men, for those in business and for those who work in many other fields or embark on new and challenging tasks, initiatives and endeavors, both personal and professional. What was so pleasantly surprising to me about the book were the stories that are so personal and truly define the human spirit - women overcoming life threatening illnesses and going on to achieve great things such as climbing Mt. Everest, women graduating from top graduate programs and then giving back by starting businesses or non-profits in underdeveloped countries, and women succeeding in the corporate world - who talk candidly about the blood, sweat and tears it took to get there. Woven throughout these stories is the way that these women have used a network to connect and support one another through career, family and personal successes, failures and challenges. The sense of community and social connection you have created through this network is unprecedented and sure to be used as a model for many organizations and networks in the future.

I found the Wall Street success stories inspirational (especially Jacki's) and as an entrepreneur myself I found the stories of entrepreneurs launching ventures and later taking those companies public to offer insight and a roadmap to navigate the ups and downs of new ventures.

Janet, by sharing your career and life experiences and telling YOUR story and that of over 85 more you show women and men how to move beyond obstacles, achieve and define success on your own terms!!!

You and these women are smart, courageous, inspirational and HUMAN. A must read for anyone looking to celebrate success and gain insight as to how to achieve success in their own lives and how to benefit from their own networks...personal and professional!
