"More Than a Feeling" - Boston debut single,
By
This review is from: More Than A Feeling (MP3 Download)
The reader of this review must place himself/herself in the time of the mid-seventies when creativity and proficiency in the music industry was encouraged by the AOR execs; before the "cookie-cutter" approach with very limited musical parameters was adopted for revenue-generation by the record companies. Creativity far exceeded technological advancement in recording production at the time Boston hit the scene. I will never forget the first time I heard "More Than a Feeling" over the air-waves; I knew the "bar had been raised" for every record produced subsequent to this release. The dynamic range of this song had far exceeded any rock production I had heard up to this point. The fluidity and smoothness of the instrumentation in this song coupled with Brad Delp's stratospheric vocal range guaranteed Boston a place in the future annals of rock music's history! Enjoy and listen closely; you will hear something in this song you have not heard before!

Best Debut Album I Own,

When I first played this record, "more than a feeling" stuck in my head. "Peace of mind" and the rest of the album are fantastic.

Classic Thumping Power Ballad,
By
This review is from: More Than A Feeling (MP3 Download)
Boston released their eponymous debut record in 1976; the first single, "More Than a Feeling" was a smash hit, peaking at #5 on Billboard's Hot 100. The single also helped push "Boston" to 17 million in sales in the U.S. alone, making it the second biggest-selling debut record in the U.S., behind only Guns N'Roses' "Appetite for Destruction." Boston often gets criticized for being too slick or representing "corporate rock," and their sound arguably is more pop than hard rock. However, "More Than a Feeling" is still a gorgeous power ballad that includes one of the catchiest guitar riffs. The single starts as a guitar ballad about a man losing his true love (Marianne) but quickly shifts into high gear with one of its many chord changes. After lead singer Brad Delp plaintively sings, "I closed my eyes and I slipped away," we get one of the greatest guitar riffs in history. It's impossible not to be moved by the song at this point. Tom Scholz is known for his obsessive studio tinkering with Boston's music, and it results in a completely polished sound here. Yes, the song lacks a certain edge, but how can you deny its beauty? Boston would go on to have several more hits, including the #1 "Amanda" a decade later; however, they'd never quite reach such perfection as they found with "More Than a Feeling." Rolling Stone magazine ranked "More Than a Feeling" #500 on their list of the 500 Top Songs. I'd probably put it in my personal Top 100 - a true pop-rock classic.
