Very good pop music album.
Bones Crosby
Also, having seen them live three times after the first album came out and knowing what a great live band they are, I can't wait to hear them play these songs live!
Kevin Conaway
Listen once and you'll be hooked, It's got the kind of songs that just make you want to listen over and over without getting tired of hearing them.

Fitz and the Tantrums got a huge cult following with much commercial success as well with their debut cd PICKIN UP THE PIECES. That was 2010 and now in 2013 we get MORE THAN JUST A DREAM. On their first release they had a distinct 60s vintage soul sound. With this new release they keep the soul aspect but leave the vintage sound behind and jump to a totally more contemporary sound with the emphasis on the sound being electronic dance pop. At first listen the new sound may turn fans off but give it a real shot. The same talent is here with the same well written songs and dynamic vocal performances. The first single OUT OF MY LEAGUE is a great track but there are some other very strong numbers. 6am and FOOL'S GOLD are the true standouts to me and are the most reminiscent of their first release. HOUSE ON FIRE and MERRYGOROUND both have a 60s Motown sound mixed with the new electronic sound. LAST RAINDROP and SPARK also are great tracks.

For me, I was pulled in to this new release right away and I loved PICKIN UP THE PIECES. And with each listen I love it more and more. This new release is indeed different but it is just as good. I highly recommend it and if the new sound takes you by surprise definitely give the whole cd a listen. You will be glad you did. This is indeed a quality sophomore effort from Fitz and the Tantrums.

Fitz and the Tantrums had a unique sound with their debut album, 2010's Pickin' Up The Pieces. Their heavy Motown-style soul influence really set them apart from any other current band.

2013 brings us their follow up album, and major label debut: More Than Just A Dream. This album is a bit of a departure from Pickin' Up The Pieces. There is still a heavy soul influence on the music, however the songs certainly take on a more modern indie feel than on the previous album. The audio mix on the album also has the band sounding less like a Motown band and more like a modern indie band. Those of you looking for the big horn and flute parts that were on the first album might be a bit disappointed with the new album. These parts are still there, just not as prevalent in the mix.

That being said, the new sound on the album is great. The band has done a fantastic job on this record of mixing their 60's influences with a modern feel to create a sound on this record that is still very unique. The songs are upbeat, dancy, and maybe even more catchy than on the first album. The first track and first single, "Out Of My League," sets the tone for the whole album. The song makes you want to move and the chorus gets stuck in your head. The same can be said about every song on the album. If I was an executive at Electra, "Spark" and "6am" would be the next two singles. "Spark" is about as indie rock as they get on this album, with an emphasis on the electronics and a prevalent guitar part. The pre-chorus and chorus on that song are huge. I can see it being a big radio hit. Songs like "The Walker" and "Get Away" follow suit. Songs such as "Fools Gold," "Keepin Our Eyes Out," and "Last Raindrop" still show off that Motown influence, they just sound a bit more modern.

I don't know why people are hating on the "new sound," because I personally think that they are amazing in this album! It's a different sound, but in my view, they still kept their style.

The first cd reminded me of Hall & Oates in their heyday. This one is even better than the first. I saw them at lollapalooza in 2011 and they are great live as well. Buy and enjoy.

We really liked the motown-ish song in previous albums, so were excited for this release. Some good stuff still, but for a lot of the songs these guys have switched over to a kind of generic, over-produced dance/pop that can already be heard from a dozen different bands. Too bad.

Where's the brass... the sax was front and center in their last album... it's either mixed in way down or absence... the band is great live... saw them in NYC a couple weeks ago... they killed it... their version of Sweet Dreams (available for download) was one of the best covers of the song I've ever heard...

Song writing is still very strong, voices are great... let's elevate the sax to where it belongs.
