3.0 out of 5 stars Maggie's voice is everything I had hoped for, August 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: More Than You Know (Audio CD)
Please let me be one of the first to discover the hidden treasures of this fine singer. I found this cd by mistake, but let me assure you that this cd is no M-I-S-T-A-K-E. It is the real thing in many ways.

First, we should begin with the voice of Maggie. It is excellent. I am more than pleased with her pips. She should have a lot bigger following than she does. It's a shame that she only has one cd out. I am a small time producer and would jump at the chance to record someone of this qualilty.

Second, we should talk a little about the band. It seemed to hit on all cyinders. It came up with some origianl sounding arrangements, but let me assure you the band didn't get in Maggie's way. It allowed her to do her thing!

Third, let's talk of repertoire. It could have been better. This is the sole reason that I didn't rate this cd higher. If it could have had a few more choice tunes then i'm sure this would have beeen a 5 star cd.

In conclusion, I think it would be wise to buy this cd and listen to these wonderful performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beg, steal, or borrow, but go and get it., April 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: More Than You Know (Audio CD)
What is so marvelous about this CD is that the quality of the sound is fully matched by the quality of the music, and to top it all Maggie Galloway voice is one of the most beautiful voice I know.
Not only it is beautiful but it has "a sound" it is unique.
I will always remember the first time I put this CD in my player, from the first note I heard, I was bowled over, maybe it was system synergy but it was the most beautiful recording and voice I heard in years.
I listened to all 12 tracks, unable to move from my chair, the last note of the last song
"More than you know" is the purest; most beautiful I've ever heard.
Even today, every time I hear this last note it gives me goose bumps, it is as clear and pure as Scottish crystal, it is a miracle.
Well all I've been talking about is the sound and the beautiful voice of Maggie Galloway.
What about the music? If you like jazz standards you cannot really go wrong, if you like something more adventurous "a la Betty Carter" then it is not for you, myself when it comes to jazz singers I like it straight.
Maggie Galloway is an interpreter rather than an improviser, but she has a perfect sense of timing and her phrasing is exceptional
The synergy between the musicians and Miss Galloway is absolutely faultless.
It is a superbly integrated band.
Bob Nieske on bass really gives a solid foundation to the music, Jeff Auger on piano
has great clarity of thought in his playing, and his sense of melody is beyond reproach, Rick Considine brushwork is sympathetic throughout, never too loud, and just so subtle.
Jim Cameron on saxophone does a solid job, but myself could have done without it,
As I feel that he does not add anything to the quality of the final product.
In actual fact it is quite clear that the best numbers musically and sonically are the one without the saxophone.
I am also a strong believer that less is more especially when the rhythm section is that good.
By now you must be convinced that it is the perfect CD? well nearly.
There are a few faults I can come up with, and here I am really nit picking;
As far as the music is concerned, the choice of material could have been more creative; songs like "The trolley song" and This cant be love are not amongst my favorite, "Boogie blues feels completely out of place, to me they are so many better songs around.
The four songs that stand out are Baltimore Oriole More than you know Daydream and especially The very though of you on which Maggie emotional coloring abilities comes to the fore.
On the audio side there is also a slight degradation in the recording quality on a few numbers, especially when Jim Cameron is playing, this is most probably due to the fact that the recording was done at different time.
The recording engineer Peter Kontrimas must be commended; it is for the most part a beautiful sounding CD.
Conclusion: beg, steal or borrow, but go and get it

4.0 out of 5 stars The lady has a fabulous voice., July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: More Than You Know (Audio CD)
This CD is wonderful. Every note Ms. Galloway hits is dead on. Her voice is full and clear. The musicians are excellent. I especially liked "Lazy Afternoon". It was a good selection of easy listening music in every way. No sound effects or gimmicks needed.
