3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book, But Wishes Come True Was Better
I bought this book on the basis that Wishes Come True was an excellent book. I loved how Ms. Nance brought her characters to life. I enjoyed reading More Than Magic, but something was missing. I would have enjoyed it more if the character had more life, chemistry...something I can't put my finger one!

Good book, I look forward to Ms. Nance's next book. Keep...

This review is from: More Than Magic (The Djinn Series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Daris-a conservative djinni, dark and dangerous, meets Isis Montgomery, the fisty mortal that is slated to become his wife. The problem is that Darius does not want a wife--mortal or djinni--but prophecy has declared he must marry this mortal in order to recover the one thing by which he defines himself--his magical powers. It is a pleasure to watch his dark and powerful personality come alive as he attempts to deal with his mortal intended. Isis is fablous heroine who is struggling to overcome smothering family ties as well as a physical disability--dyslexia--while trying to make a success of her perfurm business. Darius is her last chance, by helping her find the formula to a haunting perfume that can only be obtained on his home world. The last thing she needs to deal with is a beligerant djinni, no matter how devestatingly handsome he is, yet the each need something from the other, so the bargin is struck. Together, they find out what is truly important in life, to both djinns and mortals, and this is deep and lasting love. This is a wonderful story of reflection, growth, and stirring passion. It truly deserves a 5 star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, Mesmerizing, Sensuous, March 1, 2001

This review is from: More Than Magic (The Djinn Series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading, Wishes Come True, and was impressed with Darius loyality and friendship with Simion the bound (Djinni). So I went out and bought Darius's book, and was not disappointed. Darius -beautiful, mesmerizing and as dangerous as a man or (Djinni) in this case can be, meets Isis Montgomery, the feisty mortal that is prophesied by divine inspiration to become his wife. The problem is that Darius does not want a wife... especially a human wife. Believing that humans to be an ambitious, greedy lot. With very little redeeming quality. However prophecy has declared he must marry this mortal in order to recover the one thing by which he defines himself--his magical powers. Darius proves to be a deliciously arrogant male, who knows his worth and teaches Isis that despite her dyslexia she too is alluring, talent woman. I loved this book with its strong plot, wonderful characters. It's a well-written, wonderful book full of twists and turns. I have read this book about five times now and plan to read it several more times

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly MORE THAN MAGIC / a stinger out of the ordinary plot, May 26, 1999
By
This review is from: More Than Magic (The Djinn Series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Darius, the hero, a djinni, beautiful, mesmerizing, as dangerous as a man could be. His dark, star-kissed eyes promised exquisite joys, yet it was common knowledge he had no intention of taking a wife. Ever. Isis Montgomery, the heroine, a mortal was fated to be the wife of Darius. Knowledge of his true name would give a mortal woman power over the arrogant djinni, and an age-old enemy had carefully baited the trap. Isis would snare his attention, and the spell whe'd been given would bind him to her. JUst as Isis was saying the final words Darius was coming to accept his fate of being married to her. Isis has a store called Dream Scents where she dreams up wonderful scents for aromatherapy. The reason she is willing to call up the djinni is she has been promised the way to get a special scent that only a djinni can provide. Darius wants Isis for his wife for his own reasons. He needs her to balance his power on his own world and knows she is the one to do it. - however - he falls in love with her. Of course she finds out he needed her for the saving of his country and married her without her knowing what she was doing and gets all pushed out of shape. Of course she ends up with the special perfume that comes from Darius's country and Darius. I loved this book - it is really different. today I have ordered the first book of the series WISHES COME TRUE and I can't wait to get it. I normally do not review a book but there is no syopsis of this book listed and there needed to be one of sorts so you have mine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous!, September 26, 2000

This review is from: More Than Magic (The Djinn Series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I stayed up until 2 a.m. last night finishing this book. I really enjoyed the previous one, Wishes Come True, went out and got Darius's book right away, and was not disappointed. Isis's difficulties with dyslexia and her prowess with perfumes were a unique twist, and the djinni hero . . . oh, be still, my heart! Darius is the kind of hero I always love--commanding, seductive, and a typical stubborn male who has to be dragged into love kicking and screaming. I loved every minute of this book, and I'm sure you will, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Magic!, September 24, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: More Than Magic (The Djinn Series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
Most people, at one time or another, fantasize about having three wishes granted to them - perhaps by a genie who emerges from a bottle or lantern. Isis Montgomery, a lovely, down-on-her luck lady who believes in magic, is seeking a unique formula to make a very special perfume. Her grandmother had worn this particular scent. She called it "Magic" and told her young granddaughter that the recipe was a family legacy. The scent changes to adapt to each individual who comes in contact with it - making it one-of-a-kind - conjuring up everyone's personal paradise. She never smelled it again after her grandmother died, years before. Isis owns an aromatherapy and perfume shop - her 2nd business. Due to a ruthless, conniving ex-fiance, who happened to be her business partner, her first venture had gone bad. The man spread rumors about Isis practicing magic and managed to walk away with every one of her precious formulas, patents and all. Her family was now financing her on this second endeavor, and she was determined to make her business a success and pay them back.

On the way home from work one day, walking through the French Quarter of New Orleans, her hometown, Isis sees a tiny shop on a side street whose sign read - "Madame Paris, Curiosities, Dreams, and Magic." As she stops to look inside, she catches a whiff on the breeze of the exotic scent she has been searching for. Sure enough, inside the old store she finds a flask with just a few drops of the perfume left. She desperately wants the remnants to discover the individual ingredients, and produce the perfume for her own business. Unfortunately, the shop owner, Madame Paris, is reluctant to sell it unless she receives a very bizarre price - $100. down, and a request to be fulfilled at a later date by Isis, along with another $100. Isis is to conjure up a djinni and bind him to her, using Mme. Paris' spell, chants and all. The djinni will then grant her three requests.

And she does indeed conjure up a Djinn - Dariyavius el Zarasteya, from the planet of Kaf, where he is known as The Protector. Darius is, however, a tall, dark, handsome and extremely dangerous Alpha-Djin - definitely not bald, as Isis had imagined him. I mean, here on earth, genies are portrayed as bald, right? As it turns out, Darius needs Isis just as much as she needs him. There is an ancient prophecy that must be fulfilled if The Protector is to continue wielding his impressive powers. The prophecy involves a woman of the line of Abregaza. Isis is the only woman alive of that line. The two team up; the all powerful Djin and the beautiful but dyslexic mortal woman, to adventure, work out all the problems and mysteries which confront them, create havoc, and spark wonderful electricity - those sparks do fly - like fireworks!

"More Than Magic" is a delightful novel and I enjoyed every minute of reading it. When I first saw the plot summary, I thought the book would turn out to be too corny and predictable. However, I have read some of Kathleen Nance's novels before and really like her work. So, I tried this, and am glad I did. The storyline works, the characters, primary and secondary, are well developed and simply charming. And the romance and humor are top notch. What more could you want?

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfumer and Djinni team up for Magical Romance, November 3, 2007
This review is from: More Than Magic (The Djinn Series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love a good fantasy and this one was more than good. The hero is arrogant and haughty, but there is a core of caring that won't be denied. The heroine is feisty and struggling to assert her own strength, but doesn't hesitate to sacrifice all for a loved one.

Darius, the Protector of the djinn of Kaf has lost control of his Ma-at (magic). This is a source of great consternation; his people depend on him. While he's never short of willing females to share his pillows, he has never intended to take a zaniya (wife). There is room for nothing but the Ma-at in his life. Yet a divination has decreed that this is exactly what must be done to restore balance and return his control. Not just any female will do, his zaniya must be a Terran (of Earth) and of the line of Abregaza. Darius accepts this fate, but has an innate distrust of humans; his own best friend (Simon, the hero of "Wishes Come True") had been bound by a treacherous Terran. He sees this joining as merely a means to an end, temporary. He transports to Earth in search of one Isis Montgomery.

Perfumer and aromatherapist, Isis Montgomery is looking for a means to an end as well. She is searching for an illusive scent that will rocket her struggling business to the top. Her former partner had exploited her dyslexia and her naïve belief in magic to steal her formulas and launch his highly successful company, leaving Isis in disgrace. Isis no longer trusts men nor has she any use for magic. Yet when a short cut through an alley places her before Madam Pari's shop, she feels compelled to enter. This leads to the discovery of the scent of Isis' dreams. She must have it for her own at any price. Madam Pari explains that only a djinni can duplicate the formula. She sells Isis the remainder of the perfume along with a spell to conjure a djinni for a price and a future favor.

Isis is uncomfortable with performing the spell, but she considers the prize worthwhile. Darius transports to her side moments before the spell is complete, just in time to stop it! The spell doesn't conjure but binds. Darius accepts Isis' sincere horror as genuine. He now knows his enemy and the two agree to a bargain, three wishes for three requests. Each intends to obtain their heart's desire by manipulating the other. Falling in love is not part of the plan.

Lack of trust threatens their relationship, but a final confrontation with Madam Pari (Darius' evil rival, corrupted by power) forces them to face what is truly important to them. They must choose between their fondest dream and their love for one another.

I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful tale of two very different souls, triumphing over their weaknesses, learning to trust, and combining strengths to form their own special brand of magic! --- Reviewed for PNR Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Rather Good Story, Really Interesting Characters, November 27, 2006
This review is from: More Than Magic (The Djinn Series, Book 2) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really like a book that can take fantasy and infuse it with real issues so that you enjoy the make-believe not feel silly reading it. This is the story of Isis Montgomery, an auroma therapist living in New Orleans. The women in Isis family have always believed in the supernatural and her aunt Tildy still believes. She was used and abused by a former boyfriend who let her believe he had magical gifts, but then stole all her formulas and left her for broke. Isis suffers with dyslexia so a judge believe her ex, Ben, when he said they were his formulas not Isis'. Isis' father and four brothers are supportive, but do not believe in magic.

Isis (Ice) is now trying to recreate an illusive scent she remembers from childhood but cannot get the formula down pat. She smells the scent on the street and discovers a little magic shop where the owner claims to be able to help her get the formula by conjuring a djinn. In return, Isis has to promise the woman a favor after the djinn appears. The woman is actually an evil djinn who was banned for her actions and she wants to use Isis to get revenge.

On another realm, the protector, a djinn named Darius is suffering with weakening powers. He discovers a prophecy that says he must marry someone from an ancient line of magic on Terra (earth). He decides to pay a visit to this mystery woman his future Zaniya, Isis Montgomery and is horrified to find her performing the binding ceremony which would enslave him for thousands of years to perform wishes. Darius stops the spell and when he confronts Isis and asks her about the binding ceremony, she is shocked to learn what she was doing. She thought she was only conjuring him for a wish. Darius learns that an old enemy, Pari, is behind everything and decides to stick close to Isis in order to get her to agree to the binding ceremony that will strengthen his powers.

Darius falls in love with Isis, but does not explain to her that the binding ceremony is a marriage ceremony. He has to protect the magic at all costs. Isis agrees to the ceremony in order to get the flower needed for her new scent. Isis also loves Darius but vows she will not let anything get in the way of her success. These two have a lot of trust issues to work through before they can have a successful relationship.

This book dealt with a lot of sensitive issues like learning disabilities, sacrificing your goals for those you love and learning to trust. It was also sexy, humorous and just fun to read. I recommend it.

I'm not sure who gave it a 3 star rating, but it really didn't deserve that! It's a wonderful book, in my opinion. Great story, good characterization.... I really enjoyed it! It's one of my favorite fantasy romances actually, rating near to Dara Joy. :-)

More Than Magic quite simply is...more than magical. It's a well-written, delightful book full of twists and turns and most important, it kept this often jaded reader interested all the way through. I strongly recommend this book! Darius is an intriguing hero, one I wouldn't mind snuggling up to myself.
