Double Dudleys & Secret Identities,
By Jedibarrister (Georgetown) - See all my reviews
This review is from: More Than a Mistress and No Man's Mistress: Two Novels in One Volume (Hardcover)
Two stories: Jocelyn and Ferdinand, brothers but vastly different. Jocelyn (More than a Mistress) had always been raised to be heir by a cold and indifferent father and a lapse mother. He knows nothing of love or acceptance for who he is. He is feared by all as a dark man who lives for duels. In steps Jane Ingelsby who interrupts the latest duel and ends up getting Jocelyn shot. She's delayed to work, loses her job, and becomes his nurse. But she won't cower and he's entranced. Their story was a battle of wills that made all the sense in the world. Add to it her secret identity and secret past.
Ferdinand (No Man's Mistress) is a happy go lucky ne'er do well who can never turn down a challenge or wager. He ends up winning a house in the far reaches of the country only to find there's someone already living there. Viola Thornhill is worried he'll recognize her (and her alter ego) eventually but is desperate to hold on to what she knows in her heart was willed to her by the prior owner of the house. Their battle of wills was enjoyable (and somewhat reminiscent of Minx by Julia Quinn) but their ultimate love story made less sense. Altogether, it was a good double-header.

I read both these books quite awhile ago, but when I saw that Mary Balogh had written another book tying the other 2 with it, I knew I needed to re-read these to books. I thoroughly enjoyed both books. Mary Balogh has a great way of bringing characters to life. I can almost believe they are, or were real people. I have just ordered "The Secret Mistress" and can hardly wait to read it.

These books were simply fun to read. The first,"More than a Mistress", and my favorite of the two, kept me up past my bedtime on two nights. I found myself hurrying through chores so that I could get back to the characters. It was a much needed change after some heavy "book group" reads. Enjoy!

I like Mary Balogh's books and writing style, so I enjoyed these two stories. However, I wasn't on board with the heroines. They just seemed too much of everything to me ... too angry, too sad, too pig-headed. Since I got these for my Kindle, I'm sure I'll read them again, though.

Not much to say, other than I loved the stories so much after borrowing from the library, I bought the book (yay for a 2-in-1!) so I can read anytime and not worry about it not being there when I want it. Very nice characters, great plot, and the end chapter of "More Than a Mistress" is spectacular. Well done romance! I am excited to read the prequel now.

Mary Balogh is one of the best at creating characters that are believable, deep, and human. I always look forward to her re-prints available on Kindle.

The 2 novels were incredibly romantic, I could not leave the book alone until I read each complete novel. I spent some 4 days on the whole book. The brothers were so different, but at the same time very similar, staying true to the woman they love.

More than a Mistress is an absolute classic. No Man's Mistress is ok but the bar was set really high by the first brother's story. But, you are going to want to read both because it is a sequel.
