In the past five years, there has been a renaissance of interest in some of the old, classical hymns of Christendom, thanks to recent releases by more contempary Christian music "stars." This is a positive trend, as it would be tragic for these great and powerful songs, with their majestic melodies and timeless truths, to be somehow lost in a modernistic tide of trendiness and disposable ditties.

This particular 2-disc collection is a fine and reliable collection of some of the best loved hymns of the ages. The orchestration and choral arrangements are impeccably done, and remain faithful to traditions.

This adherance to tradition will likely make it more popular among those born prior to the "baby boom", as well as to fans of classical music. In other words, this collection, as fine as it is, may not be the best vehicle to introduce the younger generation to the wonder and richness of hymns (making exceptions, of course, for young people who love classical music or have exceptional cultural maturity and intellectual curiosity).

There is nothing to quibble about when it comes to the song selections, which offer surprising variety, from ancient Celtic classics to American spirituals. It's a wonderful overview of some of the most powerful songs ever composed. Best of all, the truth of the lyrics still shine through, even (in some cases) centuries after they were written.

The music on this CD sounds fantastic, but BE AWARE that they are only short segments of the hymns. For example, I specifically bought the CD for "Be Thou My Vision", which is actually only a short instrumental, and "Crown Him With Many Crowns", which only had one verse. Not good for a rousing sing-along while you do the dishes!

If you like classic favorite hymns that you grew up with sung by
beautiful and uplifting choral groups this is the CD for you!
I sang right along with the hymns as you probably will. Every generation will thoroughly enjoy this splendid 2 CD set for years
to come. The orchestral accompaniment is as magnifcent as the choirs.

To us this CD was not worth the cost. To many of the hymns were only 1 or 2 verses and none were the entire hymn.

These CD's will touch your heart in a way that will be profound and lasting. May I suggest that you sit back in your easy chair, shut the ringer off the phone, turn off the tv, crank up the volume on your stereo and be prepared to be swept away by it's beauty?

This music will give you goosebumps. This music will make you feel that you are literally in God's presence, before his gifted angelic choir, listening to the most beautiful sounds you have ever heard.

There isn't enough space in this forum to totally express the way I feel about how this music has touched my life. If you never buy another CD, you should give this one a try. I loved it so much, that I am buying some for the most treasured people in my life...knowing that their hearts will be soothed, every time they play it. What a way to start or end a day, than by listening to these 'More Than 50 Most Loved Hymns.'

I was so excited to play the cd when I got it, but behold the songs are virtually as long as the sample clips.

I was looking for a few good CDs of Christian hymns. This received strong reviews, so I bought it. The music is very good quality, not at all a class B production. The vocals are good, harmonious (though they can be a bit loud at a few parts) and the instruments sound great. However, one thing that no reviewer has mentioned is that the songs on these two CDs, all "50" of them, are not full-length. They only sing the first 1 or 2 verses to each song. Basically, they are 2 minute samples of the actual hymns, which is disappointing. I was hoping to learn the words to these songs and be able to sing them as I went about the day. I enjoy that the resources are available, but the case ought to explain these are not full hymns. If this does not bother you, then I would recommend these CDs for their quality. I hope this helps. I ordered this CD because I wanted recordings of hymns that were not over-complicated or overpowered by instruments and variations. Just the old standards sung in beautiful harmony. That is pretty much what I got. Not every last hymn is sung as it appears in a hymnal, but pretty close! There are a few instrumentals, which was fine with me. I would highly recommend this CD if you like simple but well-performed church music.

A tremendous set of CDs. The most inspirational music that I have heard in a long time. It uplifts and comforts you amist the trouble and turmoil of this world. It reminds you that a loving "God is in Control".

Was very pleased with this CD. It was everything I expected and then some. The sound quality is superb. There is no problem making out the words of each hymn being sung by an excellent choir.
