More Than Punk Rock,
By Kris Avalon (So. CAL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: More Than Motion (Audio CD)
Element 101's 2002 follow-up to "Stereo Girl" is as surprising as it is unique. With complicated guitar riffs, stunning melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, this is a must-have for any emo collection. Somewhat reminiscent of Jimmyeatworld's "Clarity" album (though far more complex, and with more of a punk rock flare), this euphonious treasure is perhaps Tooth & Nail's best kept secret. "Fade Away," the opening track and perhaps the greatest song on the album, is catchy and addictive, as well as the album's single, "The Fragile." My only complaint is that the album, at times, may be just a bit too experimental, making it difficult to separate verse from chorus. Also, I must warn that since this album is far more experimental than Element's previous works, those who are fond of "Stereo Girl" and "Future Plans Undecided" may find that this effort takes some getting used to (I know I did), but rest assured, once you become acquainted with the songs, it is certain to become a favorite.

This will appeal to everyone...,

You indie-rock kids... pop-punk kids,.. and even granola-eatin' kids... you all can hold hands and sit around the fire and listen to this cd. The lyrics on the cd are so powerful.. great music.. VERY well produced. Definately an improved sound compared to Stereo Girl.. much tighter - actually got a bit of a commercial feel to it.. without sounding too polished and pretty. Chrissy appears to come out of her shell as her vocals seem to blaze over the thundering drums and ripping guitars.. keep up the great work.

Decent. But not "Stereo Girl".,

Well folks, E101 is upon us again. "More Than Motion" gives us E101's original style, but "Stereo Girl" was more upbeat, yet emotional. Crissie is still one of the best vocalists, and the rest of the band are still great musicians; but they could have worked a little harder on this one. However, the guitar interlude at the beginning of "Fade Away" is just absolutely beautiful. And, Tooth&Nail knows exactly what they are doing when looking for new bands to sign...
