The ultimate tribute to Britain's "Skiffle King", March 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: More Than Pie in the Sky (Audio CD)
Bear Family's immaculate and meticulous 8 CD Lonnie Donegan retrospective rounds up over a decade's worth of studio masters, BBC recordings, live tracks and outtakes - everything that survives from 1953 to 1966 recorded by this Scottish Cockney. Lonnie Donegan amalgamated folk, blues, gospel and country years before Bob Dylan carved his "new" sound out of the music of the American South. Adding rhythm to his repertoire, Lonnie inadvertently invented Britain's most important contribution to 50's rock history. The Vipers may have been the champions of skiffle, but Lonnie Donegan was the king, introducing work songs, blues laments, gospel celebrations and folk ballads. Eight CDs may be more than the casual listener could stand, but this is the ultimate tribute to Britain's first translator of American roots music.
