Ordained in 1981, Maurine (Renee) C. Waun, D.Min. first served the United Methodist Church (Western PA Conference) and then--since 1999--several Unitarian Universalist churches in PA, OH and WV. Her degrees are: B.A. in French from Eastern Michigan University; M.A. in Linguistics from Univ. of Pittsburgh; M.Div. (for ministry) and D.Min. (Counseling) from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. She was also a chaplain in the U.S. Army Reserve for 10 years, attaining the rank of Captain. Prior to ministry, she spent several years as a teacher on a variety of levels including Montessori, high school and university. She has been active in AIDS advocacy, as well as speaking and serving on behalf of disenfranchised groups through various community groups and boards of directors. In 2005 Dr. Waun became the Founding Sponsor of the African Rural School Foundation, for over 400 disadvantaged children and AIDS orphans in Uganda (www.africanruralschools.org) and she takes volunteers there on a working trip every winter for two weeks. In addition to working and volunteering, she loves to travel the world and spend time with her family. Dr. Waun's book MORE Than Welcome: Learning to Embrace Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Persons in the Church (Chalice Press) continues to inspire GLBT persons, families, allies and advocates as the issue becomes more and more visible in mainstream churches.
