What a great resource!,

This review is from: More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Paperback)
This book provides a very neccessary complement to speech therapy for children with autism and related disorders. The presentation is lively, easy to read, jargon-free, respectful of children and families, and clearly laid out. Most importantly, this book helps parents and professionals identify a child's communication level, select relevant goals, and plan effective interventions. This will be an integral part of our collaboration with families.

What every parent of a child with ASD NEEDS to know,
By
This review is from: More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Paperback)
I have always been pleased with resources from Hanen and this book is no exception. As both a pediatric speech-language pathologist and a mother of a wonderful toddler with autism I highly recommend this cutting edge, informative book. I love that the book takes our children's sensory preferences and interests into major consideration during interactions. The book is clear and simple to follow. The information on the internet regarding autism can be overwhelming and complex, even for the rare parent like myself who has been in the field for several years. The More Than Words program makes language and social skills acquisition enjoyable and manageable for parent and child. The parent does not need to add daily therapy to their already long "to do" list. Therapy is ongoing from morning till night during all of your interactions with your child. We should always have goals in mind, but the therapy is constant as long as the outlined principles in More Than Words are followed. Similar to a sensory diet. This is our children's communication diet. I also like that the pictures in the book are emotionally uplifting. It is not easy having a child with ASD but this book offers the parent a feeling of wellbeing and hope as they help their child climb the developmental ladder of language acquisition and social skills. Horray for Hanen. You've done it again!

I would recommend this to anyone who's child is having a hard time learning speech, whether they have autism or not. From this book, I have picked up several wonderful new ways to interact, as well as insights into the way a child thinks, and how to get a child's attention. The book breaks things down in such a way that you can easily pick out which things will and won't work with your child and develop your own plan on what is best. As a side note, the illustrations are very enjoyable and cute.

Buy This Book. It Works.,

This review is from: More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Paperback)
No dogma, no "one-size-fits-all" program - just a lot of playful but powerful techniques to help build a child's communication and social skills in the context of everyday life. Unlike many books on autism, this one is jargon-free and easy for an exhausted parent or teacher to read. It doesn't dumb its ideas down, but presents them clearly and memorably (with charming illustrations). I work with kids with autism, and lend out a lot of books to people looking for more information - time and time again, this is the one I've seen people grab onto as a lifeline.

This review is from: More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by my son's speech therapist. This book was easy to understand and use. Best of all, it offered ideas and solutions that cost little or no money to try, just the time and effort to play with your child and observe the tools effectiveness. It has helped a lot with helping my son to develop a working vocabulary.

This best book I've ever bought in my life,

This review is from: More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Paperback)
My son was ahead developmentally in every way. He pointed, made eye contact, was very social, ran by 11 months, put simple jigsaw puzzles together, and asked for what he wanted. When he was about 18 months old, he 'lost' all of that. He seemed to be in his own world, completely stopped speaking, didn't point any more, made no eye contact, preferred to be alone, seemed dazed, and didn't seem to hear anything any more. Being a divorced mother of two with limited resources, I didn't know where to turn for help. When he was diagnosed with autism 8 months later, I was devastated. How could I bring my precious little boy back into my world? Would he ever speak again? I couldn't afford therapy. That's when I found this book. 'More Than Words' was very easy to understand and implement immediately. My son is 6 years old now. This book has helped me bring him back into my world. Every day I still continue to see improvements in all aspects of his communication as I continue to use this book. He is using sentences now, points, and can ask for things again. The book is written in such a way that it can be used as your child grows and advances. I will continue to use it for years to come. If you only buy one book to help your child with communication...make it this one. It has truly changed our lives!

Our bestselling title on autism and communication,

This review is from: More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Paperback)
This book was written for parents of preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Written by a speech-language pathologist, this book provides a step-by-step program that trains parents to help children under the age of six learn to communicate through everyday activities. The chapters are divided into four color-coded levels of communication so parents can easily locate those strategies that are best for their child. The book contains a wealth of practical information, and the colorful illustrations positively depict a variety of communication activities. I have enjoyed using this book as a resource for parents and myself as an Early Intervention Specialist. It is very user friendly. It is not too intimidating for parents with a child that has been newly diagnosed with ASD.

Overpriced at Amazon,

I am not sure why this book is coming up as $90 to $200 on Amazon. It is a wonderful book, but go purchase it from the Hanen website for the price of $54 instead of paying up to 4 times that for a used copy from the Amazon vendors. Not sure what is going on here...

NOT OUT OF PRINT!,
This review is from: More Than Words: Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Paperback)
This book came highly recommended to us from several speech and language pathologists at the Kennedy Krieger Institute working with our daughter as a way to supplement our own communication with our 3 year-old with autism. It's targeted towards younger children and helps parents integrate learning in play-based settings using methodology set forth by the Hanen Centre. They warned me, though, that despite the fact that the book is still being printed, the prices on Amazon is far above its retail recommended price. For parents who are already coping with the emotional and huge financial burden of treating children with ASD, it was helpful to be informed that I didn't have to be taken advantage of and end up paying double for a book (that is still worth double, but still). I think you can get this item for its listed price through the Hanen Centre and the Special Needs Project.
