Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Arnold follows No Jumping on the Bed! with another open-ended, goofy tale of unforeseen consequences featuring brothers Walter and William. As Walter helps William fill the bathtub, their mother cautions, "Leave the faucet on another minute, then no more water in the tub!" Walter cranks the handle too quickly and too far, breaking it, and soon there is water, water everywhere. The current sweeps the claw-footed tub out the door of the boys' apartment and down the stairs, into one apartment after another. As the flood rages, William sits comfortably in his ceramic canoe, while the startled neighbors cling to a variety of makeshift flotation devices: "Out went Mabel on the table.... Uncle Nash sat in the trash... Little Dottie sailed the potty." A cumulative roster of these rafts plays up the fun. Arnold uses colored pencil and watercolors to render every blue splash and shadowy hallway in smooth detail. Each object-bathroom fixture, floating toy or piece of furniture-is a masterpiece of shading and shape. The only problem here is that the adults' faces are more expressive and effectively drawn than the children's. Even so, the illustrations alone could explain to beginning readers the story of this wild water ride. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?Fans of No Jumping on the Bed! (Dial, 1987) will relish this similar cumulative adventure that demands to be read aloud. At bath time, William's older brother Walter (a reformed bed-jumper) is supposed to turn off the tap before the tub gets too full. The story that follows is his tale of what would happen if.... The tub overflows, and William, with his bathtub, goes rushing out the door on a flood of water. Past his parents, down the stairs, picking up neighbors in his wake: "Out went Mabel on the table. Sue and Vern clung to a fern. Uncle Nash sat in the trash. Patty Fuzzle steered her puzzle. Little Dottie sailed the potty." After the flood puts out a fire and the group lands in the street, William is dubbed a hero...and Walter's story is over. But, engrossed in the tale, Walter forgets the water, the tub overflows, and out goes William.... Arnold's soft pencil and watercolor illustrations are full of amusing details that will keep young readers coming back again and again. His stylized, cartoonlike figures look appropriately stunned by the unfolding events. This should be a popular choice for story hour.?Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library

More About the Author

Born in Elmira, New York, Tedd grew up in a family of six with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida. He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a Kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, No Jumping on the Bed!. His second son, William, now stars in No More Water in the Tub!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published more than 30 books as author and illustrator. When not working on his books, Tedd's interests include tennis, sketching, reading, coin collecting, and the computer."The inspiration to begin writing and illustrating for children came from my wife, Carol. As a kindergarten teacher, she collected picture books. I was attracted to their colorful pages and the way the words and pictures played with each other, much like the captioned cartoons I had drawn when I was young."Perhaps the biggest surprise of my career as an author is that I'm now going back to elementary school! Visiting young readers in classrooms and libraries is something I love. Kids keep me on my toes and they ask a lot of questions. The number one question seems to be, 'Where do you get your ideas?' It's also the hardest question to answer because every idea is different. Some ideas seem to pop out of thin air -- while I'm in the shower or walking the dog. Others come from reading or research. But most of my ideas come from my family and the things they do and say."For instance, one time when my first son, Walter, was five years old, I found him lying on the couch, looking pale as a ghost and clutching a Bible to his chest. He was praying! When I asked what was wrong, he wouldn't answer. In fact, he wouldn't even open his mouth. My wife, Carol, finally coaxed a response from him: he pointed inside his mouth. Carol exclaimed, 'You have a loose tooth!' Walter's eyes nearly popped out with fright. We quickly assured him that it was perfectly okay for his tooth to come loose and that a new one would replace it. But Carol and I looked at each other and realized that despite all our efforts to be good parents, we had somehow completely forgotten to warn Walter that teeth fall out! He had thought he was falling apart! I made a little note in my journal; then ten years later, I expanded that memory into my book Parts."Tedd Arnold lives in Elmira, New York, with his wife, Carol, two sons, Walter and William, two cats, Cody and Frankie, and one dog, Hershey.

4.0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book, I like it, April 13, 1999

My son is a HUGE fan of No Jumping on the Bed, and we looked forward eagerly to this book arriving in the mail! My son loves it just as much, and it's on our frequent read list. I don't like it quite as well as "Jumping", mainly because it seems a little forced into the same format, and I am somewhat disturbed by the fire scene at the end, but I still just love the illustrations, and would recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Children love this book!, June 15, 1998

This review is from: No More Water in the Tub! (Hardcover)
This book about brothers William and Walter is a wild bathtub ride that will pique every child's imagination and tickle his or her funny bone. My children, ages 4 and 5, love the silly rhymes and chant them along with me while laughing uproariously. This is a great book for reading to an entire class because it is well written and has large and vivid illustrations. We have read this book many, many times and never tire of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars No More Water in the Tub, May 29, 2002
A Kid's Review
No More Water in the Tub is a bathtub story. William and Walter accidentally screwed the knob off their tub and the tub broke loose because there was too much water. They went through apartments. William put out a fire and got a medal. This book is good for all ages. It's a funny story with amazing illustrations. I would give it five stars.
