The debut CD from the Miami-based Cuban-American singer-songwriter Jorge Moreno is an excellent introduction to the Latin singing sensation who may one day rival the likes of
Marc Anthony and
Jon Secada. Moreno grew up listening to Cuban, British, and American music. These influences, which are melded by Moreno into a sonic stew he calls "tropical alternative hip-hop rock," are heard throughout this recording. Being a Latino, Moreno gives us a haunting bolero entitled "Reloj," which contrasts with the equally endearing ballads "Despertaré" and "Volver a Empezar." "16" reveals Moreno's Beatles-influenced pop side, while "Ella" shows how he handles hip-hop beats. The standout track is Moreno's rousing remake of
Desi Arnaz's classic Cuban conga "Babalu," which Moreno played on a program celebrating the 50th anniversary of
I Love Lucy. Moreno's silky tenor voice, along with his genre-crossing songs, ensures future success.
