Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Morgan is delighted to learn that there is a baby sister growing in mother's tummy, and she looks forward to all the things they will do together. But the baby is born too early and dies. The family grieves together, and Morgan suggests that they say a special goodbye to Marissa, who is now being cared for by God in heaven. They invite friends and neighbors to a memorial service and release balloons with messages tied to them. This ceremony is comforting, but they will always miss the child, who remains a part of their family. The story is written simply and clearly, with a strong emphasis on Christian hope, using reunion with loved ones after death as a vehicle to help children manage bereavement. Psychological suggestions are included in an afterword to help adults deal with children in grief situations. The full-page illustrations are minimal, flat, black-and-white drawings.
