Editorial Reviews

Volume 5 -Shuga and Shaman Torogai both embark on their own quests to determine the true nature of the Water Spirit, each risking their lives against very different threats. Facing starvation locked in a secret vault, Shuga comes to the same shocking conclusion as Torogai, and learns the real tragic future of Chagum. Meanwhile, the Hunters find Balsa, putting everyone in immediate peril. Balsa is forced to flee, but Chagum won't leave after learning what's happened to his brother back in the royal palace! Torn between his two lives, Chagum is lost as the torch comes down on his new home. Volume 6 -Chagum, Balsa and the others reach the remote Yukue village in search of more information about the Spirit. When Chagum learns he is destined to be killed by the Rarunga, he finally lashes out against Balsa. She has been keeping secrets from him for too long, and the burden of being the Guardian of the Spirit has finally become too much. Shuga and the Hunters arrive in the Yukue village, and face off against Madam Torogai. They engage in a battle of wills to see who can protect Chagum from the claws of the Rarunga. Will it be the New Yogo empire and its thousands of warriors, or Balsa and her single spear?

I bought Moribito 1 & 2 and watched them. I loved them. I ordered the rest of the series at once. The story is well-written. The heroine, Balsa (I believe it's spelled right) has a personality that usually male character does. It's a fantazy, yet the realistic artwork such as rice paddy fields and Asian looking houses and others make you feel it's credible. Food you see in the show looks very similar to food in Asian countries for your information. Actually, the boy's name "Chagm" reminds me Korean name. I think "Shin-yogo" is renamed Korea and the old tribe is native Japanese "Ainu." And "Cam-ba," where Balsa is from is renamed Nepal. Well, this is worth buying. I wish I could have had them as a complete series. To complete them individually, it was a bit too expensive for me.

The peaceful life that Chagum, Balsa, and Tanda have shared is coming to an end. The Emperor's troops have reached them once again. Now they go with Torogai to a Yukue village where the legends of the Guardian are passed down. They learn that the Guardians of the past have all died after fulfilling their duty to protect the egg within them. After nearly giving up, Chagum remembers that Balsa will always be there to protect him. They set out for the mountains and hold up for the winter. For after the winter, Chagum will instinctively go to the place of celebration and let the egg hatch.

These are great volumes. The emotions of the characters are explored in greater detail, and their bonds become stronger. Although there is a sense of impending terror, there is also the comfort of friendship and love. Maybe those things can save Chagum's life, and the lives of ll those who live on the peninsula.

In these 7 episodes Balsa and Chagum are joined by Madame Toragai and Tanda in a journey to a distant and traditional Yagoo village to learn more about the ancient legends regarding the Guardian of the water spirit. Chagum learns the fate of his predecessor one hundred years before. In the meantime the Star Reader Shuga realizes that the drought sign has not disappeared from the sky and he returns to the ancient writings of the first Star Reader to learn the true tale of the first Mikado. Chagum's elder brother the first prince, Sagum dies. (His health had always been delicate.) Shuga and the Mikado's seven member secret agents/ soldiers arrive at the Yagoo village to take Chagum home. Instead, Balsa and Chagum escape to a mountain cave to spend the winter until it's time for the egg to hatch. Madame Toragai and Shuga exchange information, both have portions of the true story, even together they don't know everything.

These 2 DVD's played fine, no problem at any time.
