Book Description

September 5, 2012
Brought up in a religious home, Sophia believes the only way to have a forever family is by following church leaders and obediently choosing the right. She goes to the right school, marries the right man in the right place, and does the right thing by staying home to raise her children. But when she starts asking questions about grace, love, and the nature of God, she realizes her spiritual struggles could rip her family apart. “This book is an incredibly honest portrayal of one person’s struggle to find God.”~Pastor John Bradford “Sophia Stone has a fine eye and a searching heart. Her story of growing up in and reaching through her Mormonism for a deeper, more authentic spirituality reflects all the ways that religion can both keep us satisfied with easy answers and push us to more difficult and complicated realizations. We need a hundred more books like this one, telling the truths of Mormon women's lives.” ~Joanna Brooks, author of The Book of Mormon Girl “Sophia Stone captured my attention from the beginning. This collection of personal essays, about questioning the legitimacy of Mormonism after having faith in the religion for the first 30-something years of her life, is not just a controversial quake to a reader’s heart and soul. Stone’s voice is brave, bold and intriguing. And surprisingly relatable to someone who is not religious.”~Jessica Bell, author of String Bridge

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting spiritual memoir September 15, 2012
Format:Paperback
I was completely riveted by Sophia Stone's moving spiritual memoir about growing up--and away from--her Mormon faith. It's an intensely personal, never polemical story of her struggles to grasp promised spiritual rewards that remain always out of reach.

Her quick mind and sensitive heart shine through this well-paced, beautifully written narrative. As she awakens to the abuses in her church, which ties one's eternal destiny to one's earthly family, her whole world shifts. It's deeply satisying to watch Stone change from timid pleaser to a brave voice in the wilderness who won't be silenced any longer. And yet her abiding desire to truly know God remains a steady pulse throughout.

I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who's ever struggled to be "good enough" for God's love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking honesty and courage September 10, 2012
Format:Paperback
The faith and belief systems we inherit and nurture during our formative years generally become the moral and ethical compasses we rely upon to make sense of the world around us. They can also provide a great sense of personal affirmation and solace when we experience the internal struggles and challenges which inevitably come our way.

It is with breathtaking honesty and courage that Sophia Stone shares her personal revelatory experiences as she journeyed through her beloved Mormon faith. She vividly captures the heartbreaking and seemingly inevitable consequences these `enlightenments' can have on relationships with family, friends and the broader `faith' community.
Her willingness to reflect on the impact on her individuality, self-esteem and `purpose in life' is remarkable.

The Mormon Diaries is a testament to Sophia's character which encapsulates the qualities of integrity, authenticity, and self-sacrifice (to name just a few). The importance and relevance of the phrase, `To Thine Own Self Be True' resonates throughout this journey and is constantly accompanied by thoughts and actions of compassion and tolerance.

I am truly indebted to Sophia for the new perspectives I have gained as a consequence of being exposed to her insightful and transparent words of wisdom. There is an even greater sense of privilege when one contemplates the high price she has already paid (and may continue to pay in the future), for ultimately accepting her own understandings of the `truth' and of the eternal mysteries of this life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, Interesting and Admirable. September 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The author's honesty in this memoir gained my admiration. Her faith gave her the courage to challenge her belief in her Mormon upbringing. The agony she felt while going through her thought processes really moved me. The loss of respect from some family members created a rift, but still Sophia Stone allowed herself the freedom to seek the truth as she saw it. The love and support of her husband touched me, despite the fact he held his own beliefs dear. Her open discussions with one of her young, pre-teen children brought home the difficult decisions she had to make as a mother with regard to being honest, open and allowing her feelings to not influence her children.

The story of Ms. Stone is made more interesting with her brief notelets of Mormon history and belief system. Not having had any contact with that particular religion, I found it very informative without being lectured.

Happy to recommend.
