If you want to hear the best of the best, this CD is it. These hymn arrangements are just beautiful and very touching. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the choir and wants to feel a little closer to heaven. The choir seems to sing literally with one voice and you feel like they are singing just for you. 3.0 out of 5 stars White bread, well-baked in spots
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir that performs on this disc is a tightly-knit, well-conducted unit, and some of the tracks on the disc border on the ethereal. "Lead, Kindly Light," "Sweet Hour of Prayer" (in parts) and "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," for example, touch the soul and bring tears to the eyes.

However, on other arrangements the choir sounds like a...

5.0 out of 5 stars A good mix of the familiar and unfamiliar, November 14, 2001
The Morman Tabernacle Choir used to sound mighty impressive on the old mono LPs; how much better they sound on CDs with Telarc's Direct Stream Digital. Granted that each of their albums sound pretty much alike in their choice of songs and in the style in which they are sung, I was happy to see that their latest offering, "The Sound of Glory" (CD-80579) at least includes some not overly familiar selections such as "Lead, Kindly Light" and "Take Time to Be Holy" along with the truly familiar ones such as "Simple Gifts" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Craig Jessup conducts the Chorus with the Orchestra at Temple Square in (according to a sticker on the jewel case of my copy) a celebration of Salt Lake City 2002.

Without their realizing it, the producers have given us a very timely offering after the events of September 11, 2001. Thanks for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Sabbath, April 16, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The Sound of Glory-Battle Hymn of the Republic (Audio CD)
I LOVE IT!!! What better way to enjoy the Sabbath than to sing of the Lord's Praises with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? This album is just the ticket! It's very powerful, and uplifting.

What? You mean I can only give this album five stars? But that doesn't even BEGIN to do it justice!

I love it. Truly a masterpiece!

If you only own one Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD, this is the one. It has creative arrangements of many favorite hymns, as well as the best recording of the Wilhousky Battle Hymn arrgmt that I have ever come across. The only downer: it has (another) recording of Simple Gifts, which has been beat to death by choirs in the last decade.

I especially love the 'Glory' pieces on it: Full of timpani, brass, and alleluias- one of those discs you turn all the way up and direct the stereo when noone is looking. I hope my neighbors like it too; they probably hear it quite a bit.

Beautiful CD. Especially enjoyed the wonderful Come Thou Fount, and the simplicity of the shaker hymns Simple Gift and Take Time to Be Holy. Battle Hymn of the Republic and The Spirit of God are touching and powerful, as well. After owning it for years, I bought it as a thank you gift for a friend.

It was great. Tabernacle Choir was so powerful team. I've known Dr. Craig Jessop. He was a guest and directed in my choir. There are few songs in CD that we shared with him. It was awesome between two different choirs (my choir and there).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sound of Glory, March 31, 2008
This review is from: Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The Sound of Glory-Battle Hymn of the Republic (Audio CD)
I listen to this CD most Sundays and sometimes other days if I'm at home and never tire of listening to it. My favorites are "Arise, O God, and Shine" and "All Things Bright and Beautiful". The arrangements are beautiful and I feel the Spirit as this music plays. It is peaceful and uplifting. The CD includes a booklet with lyrics and information about the choir and conducter. Another winner for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

That "Telarc Sound"... what else can I say. Rich powerful sound from 5 full range speakers bursts into your living room, immersing you in the magic of the Mormon Tabernacle and that "telarc sound".

5.0 out of 5 stars The Choir at its finest, November 23, 2001

This review is from: Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The Sound of Glory-Battle Hymn of the Republic (Audio CD)
There is a reason that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has become the most widely known choir in our day. They are magificent. Their consummate choral performances are repeated on this album, which contains many traditional hymns and historic American themes.

The choir's vocal performance on this disc is superb. Each song sounds pristine, crisp, and angelic; the songs are complemented by some interesting arrangements of these beautiful pieces of music. These songs are moving, invoking a variety of religious and patriotic sentiments in the wake of September 11th.

Many of my very favorite hymns are here, including some traditional American folk hymns that are less commonly performed in the Church but are nonetheless absolutely beautiful. "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," for instance, is in my opinion one of the most moving pieces of music ever written.

Every single song on this album is beautifully written and spectacularly performed. If you like choral music, you will love this CD!
