5.0 out of 5 stars Rythm and Booze
When you listen to The Morning 40 it isnt hard to guess what city they are from. The essence of everything New Orleans comes through in the Jazz/Funk sounds. Think of it as music for the Mardi Gras party you wished you could have gotten in to.

2.0 out of 5 stars The music and compilation were not as good as the review . . .
from a major men's magazine.

I love the quirky, offbeat blues/Zydeco/Southern rock/swamp music which is prevalent along the Gulf coast, but this was a disappointment, considering the glowing review which my husband and I had read prior to buying it.

But, as with all our music, we'll shelve it for about a year and then revisit when we've been drinking...

5.0 out of 5 stars SLEAZY BURLESQUE: DEVILED VOICE & HORNS OVER EASY, August 13, 2004

NEW ORLEANS SEXTET ... we're talking pickled lyrics you relish like the day-old olive salad on a smushed Muffaletta, at its best when left out for a bit and perfect for a pack.

If only holey fishnet emitted sound, it'd fit with the 40's outfit. The "burlesque" comes from Rickshaw, the least visible of the bunch planted in back bending trombone notes, and Josh -- the reserved little leader in fedora and only other dude toting horn (saxophone) who bears animated rodentia resemblance with deep Oompa Loopah from set of deranged helium lungs, an effect without pedals like a welcome mat to flavor country. I see everyone as their particular animal, and lately my favorite piece to the Morning 40 Federation is Josh's vox.

I know about Ryan Scully too, one of the guitarists and other lead singer, who completes the part of their sound that will Always write my fix in the first place. He is Rock & Roll, trust me, and then some. Still unable to specifically pin his vocals other than of course on the rougher side singers (well beyond Reed/Dylan, where every great singer who couldn't sing begins) along the spectrum (Marley really messes what I'm trying to say but remains personally accurate).

This eponymous debut on a national label -- songs culled from their first two indie releases -- makes for a hamfisted greatest hits. Check their website for tour dates and catch their act.

5.0 out of 5 stars you can't just sit there!, April 15, 2006

you can't just sit there when you hear the 40s, whether live or on CD. you'll need to get up, drink somebody else's beer, jump around like a fool, and yell lyrics back with a face-splitting grin on your mug. you'll need to start investing in tomorrow's hangover RIGHT NOW. this is a CD of clever, booze-soaked original songs littered with hooks & lyrics that will stick in your head for a good while (if you're lucky).

the 40s are impossible to categorize. picture a punk band on tour. they run their van right over a marching band and crash into the carnival across the street. the six survivors pick up instruments and get on stage.

this is funky, rocky, jazzy, bluesy goodtime stuff. it could only come from new orleans. it is impossible to play the 40s too loud. if you pass a chance to see the 40s live, you're a fool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Living It Up, August 18, 2004

I am feeling Morning 40 Federation because they play feel-good music. Their style of music can't be put into 1 category. When you hear them, u will want to have a good time with friends. It was genius of them to come with these unique songs because it sets them apart from other bands. Don't just get the album. U gotta catch them on tour. Peace

5.0 out of 5 stars An album to travel while listening..., August 17, 2004

Morning 40 Federation, is a band who likes to have fun and drink a lot, and sing about it, with a great vibe and genuine and unique sound, with some sarcasm and creative lyrics. I think this is why I don't get tired of this album. Some influences of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Fishbone and jazz / blues, since they are from New Orleans!

They rhyme nickel, pickle, liquor, and snicker bar. Is that tight? No it isn't...or well not that way, but maybe in another.

As with their only other album, it is not for children or the overly sensitive.

It is pretty rough stuff. I would say that if you love Down By Law (the movie), you would love this album.

I love it and am dreaming of them releasing more (if they are still together, alive, etc.).

But, as with all our music, we'll shelve it for about a year and then revisit when we've been drinking heavily with friends -- and see if that makes it more palatable.

Perhaps we'll re-review then.
