4.0 out of 5 stars Good move in ditching the rap
I think that 40 Below Summer's first album might have been more anthemic, but it had some elements of rap in there that I wasn't too thrilled with. 5.0 out of 5 stars Fly Away with "The Mourning After", February 15, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Mourning After (Audio CD)
An album of masters. It is so nice to see that there are bands out there capable of such work. Sadly, all the recognition gets focused on the limp bizkit's of the world. The feelings that 40 Below can create can only be accomplished by a band with superb skill and musicianship.

Fuelled by emotion and intense with direction, "The Mourning After" will absorbed you, taking you on a journey away from pain and ignorance to a place where you can be open and secure. It soothes with its euphoric dreamlike guitar sequences as displayed in "Breathless", but at the same time it roars with ferocity in "A Season in Hell".

All the tracks use both tones to paint a picture, and inside the picture lies the genius of 40 Below Summer. A band like this reminds that real music isn't doomed... it's just like the people who create and listen to it... on the outside of everyone else.

One of the best of 2003.

Okay, as i said before...I hate gay nu-metal but 40's music is much more then just nu-metal! I love all the songs in this album althought it doesn't outdo their debut its still an awsome follow up to "invitation to the dance" i heard the song "self medicated" while watching & listining to the metal channel--i was actullie happy that 40 had made another...It's quite incredible! For some one who can't stand nu-metal to enjoy 40's music it takes alot because this guys are truly awwsome musicians so support 40 below summer and leave the other nu-metal bands alone! Buy it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, March 13, 2004

This is a very good CD, particularly nu-metal standards. The band is very tight overall, and all of the members of the band can handle their instruments very well. In my opinion Max Illidge goes unopposed as the best nu-metal vocalist out today. This CD has alot of variety. Rain and Breathless are slower, more emotional tracks, but songs like F.E. and A Season In Hell will tear your face off. Overall if youre tired of nu-metal cliches this is something I definetely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oddly Enough.., March 9, 2004

I was not a fan of 40 Below Summer's first CD. Frankly, I thought it was mostly trite songwriting and pointless music. This time, however, I was blown away by the changes they've undergone. The songs are tight-sounding, and are very nicely done. The vocals sound a lot better, and the overall feel of everything is much better. If you're looking for something groovy, similar to Sevendust in sound, pick it up on the cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars COULD THEY BE ANY BETTER, February 13, 2004
This review is from: Mourning After (Audio CD)
I've been into 40 below summer for a long time now. I love there sideshowfreaks cd, and I also loved invitation to the dance. Then they brought out "The Mourning After," It was different, but not in a bad way, in an excellent way. It really gave a chance to hear what max can really do with his voice. The song that I believe best demonstrates his incredible voice is "Rain"
I think they might have made a perfect cd, because they still have a very heavy edge, with max doing more singing. If you don't have this cd your crazy pick it up and you will be blown away.

5.0 out of 5 stars 40 Below Summer is to stay with their 2nd release!, November 24, 2003
This review is from: Mourning After (Audio CD)
I got their first album about a year and a half ago. The C.D. was really done well. I was really impressed on the band's talent as musicians. My favorites would have been Rope, Sideshow, and Power Tool. I got their 2nd album about a couple of weeks ago, and wow!, once again 40 below sent me through a awesome ride. This album is alot more mature than the last and they hardly have any rap. My favs, would be Breathless, Taxi Cab,Better Life, and A Season in Hell. This proves that bands don't have to change their certain style of music and still have success. I do beleive that Max does have a very unique voice and it will have an effect on rock in times to come. For those people who are leary about them just because of what album covers look like, you are making a huge damn mistake! Listen to them and you'll see why I say this, you won't regret it. In my opinion, 40 Below Summer has to be one of the best bands in all of music ever. Buy This C.D., you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Mouning After", November 3, 2003
This review is from: Mourning After (Audio CD)
40 below summer has come a long way. Inspired by bands from Slipknot to Taproot, they have been able to get two records out in the open and still have a really good fan base. "The Mourning After" shows the world that 40 below summer is here to stay. With there latest offering Cristin Machado from Ill Nino appears in track 7 called *F**k Everyone*. And Max Illidge the singer of 40 below summer appears on track 9 called "Have You Ever Felt?" on the new "Ill Nino" album called "Confession's" Using the power of melody and the power of gut wrenching guitar riff's , powerful drums and curses screams and bellows out of this world. 40 below summer is something you can not compare to anyone else. They are very original. Not commonly found now a days in music. They are a band that never got any recognition in the past. But they have stepped it up with "The Mourning After". It's a awesome CD. All I have been listening to is "The Mourning After". They also play the best show's. They do not need all the hight technical equipment. They are just a normal band that steps it up. If they ever come around your area. Check them out. And if your from Massachussetts. See you there.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, what a drastic improvement., February 4, 2005
This review is from: Mourning After (Audio CD)
This proves with the right production, and progression, any band can release a semi-classic. I don't know why, I find this album to be extremely excellent. The first album showed promise, but some selections were pretty poor.. I would recommend this for purchase.
