Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A rare Canadian among the R&B elite, Deborah Cox is also notable as one of the few certified divas to write or cowrite her own songs. With her reputation thus established, Cox boldly pushes into a new direction on The Morning After, offering comparatively few ballads as well as two songs aimed straight at the dance floor: the percussive rump-shaker "Up & Down (In & Out)" and the wildly caffeinated "Mr. Lonely." That both appear in myriad remixed versions on an accompanying CD makes Cox's intent clear. Still, fans of the singer's earlier, softer sounds aren't completely shut out. "Hurt So Much" is anguish as a state of mind, while the lush, octave-defying "Play Your Part" puts the passive-aggressive relationship into focus. Sisters get an anthem in "Starting with You," which best captures Cox's overriding messages of affirmation and individuality. Of course, with a voice this boundless and beautiful, Cox could make the white pages sound tingly. That she strives for something more makes The Morning After worth hearing. --Kim Hughes

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Deborah, November 11, 2002

This review is from: The Morning After (Audio CD)
R&B diva Deborah Cox returns with her long-awaited 3rd set, The Morning After. It's good to have her back. The album is a mix of uptempo R&B, signature soulful ballads and dance tracks. The highlights:
Up & Down (Original & Remix) Nice laid back party jam -that unfortunately has not received much support from US radio.
Play Your Part-excellent R&B ballad with wonderful vocals-should definitly be a single.
Hurt So Much- Tear-jerker ballad, with standout vocals-another strong contender for a single.
The Morning After- another great ballad that is rumored to be the 2nd single.
Oh My Gosh-sexy up tempo R&B cut that is fun to dance to.
Starting With You-another awesome ballad and showcase for Deb's amazing voice.
Mr. Lonely- current club smash-show's why Deb is queen of the dancefloor.
Absolutely Not-Deb's #1 Club smash from Dr. Dolittle 2.
The rest of the tracks aren't horrible, just not as amazing as the ones I've mentioned. Overall, it's a great CD that may finally grant Deborah the mainstream crossover success that has so far eluded her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ms. Deborah's new cd., November 7, 2002
By
This review is from: The Morning After (Audio CD)
This is the third release from Canadian R&B songstress Deborah Cox and it is her best yet. It is a mixture of jeep tunes,3 ballads and 2 house tracks. The best track on the cd is the ballad "Hurt So Much" which is very much like "Unbreak My Heart" by Toni Braxton. The rest runs toward current R&B trends with the best tracks being the first single "Up & Down(In & Out)", "Oh My Gosh", "Giving It Up" ,"Play Your Part" and "2 Good 2 Be True". The dance tracks are the latest club track and I think Ms. Cox's first from scratch house track "Mr. Lonely" and a single edit of the huge club hit "Absolutely Not".BUT there is a special limited edition cd out that was not from here(Amazon.com) but from another retail store that I actually own. It features a second disc of remixes of "Mr. Lonely" and "Up & Down(In & Out)" . This cd features FULL 12" MIXES !! The mixes are by Hex Hector & Mac Quayle(10:07),Junior Vasquez(10:42) and Widelife(11:21) of "Mr. Lonely" and the mixes by Godson(4:41) and Hector & Quayle(6:31) of "Up & Down (In & Out)". Amazon .com doesn't sell this version so be on the look out if you really want those rare mixes!
