4.0 out of 5 stars Real rock 'n' roll!, August 23, 2003
This review is from: Morning After (Audio CD)
Back in the early 70s the J. Geils Band put out some bluesy harp-and-piano style rock 'n' roll, and their second album, 1971s "The Morning After", is one of their best and most varied.

It opens with the catchy R&B of "I Don't Need You No More", followed by the excellent, harp-driven instrumental "Whammer Jammer", which is a showcase for the group's talented harpist and co-founder, Richard "Magic Dick" Salwitz.
"So Sharp" is a funky, swinging slice of soulful blues-rock, "The Usual Place" is one of the band's best ballads, and then comes "Gotta Have Your Love" and "Looking For A Love", two tough barroom rockers.

"Gotta Find Me A New Love" is a little bit generic, but it's a good listen while it lasts. "Cry One More Time" is a great slow piece of rhythm & blues. And the album finally winds down with the piano-driven funk of "Floyd's Hotel" (more excellent harp playing) and the hard rocker "It Ain't What You Do (it's how you do it)".

Even though this is hardly innovative music, the J. Geils Band makes it all sound fresh and energetic. And you don't even need to edit anything out!
"The Morning After" stands alongside "The J. Geils Band" and "Bloodshot" as the group's best and bluesiest efforts. Highly recommended.

This is a absolute classic rock and roll record. It has some funky FUNKY dance tunes and a few mid tempo tear in yer beer style jams as well. Check for "The Usual Place" for instance. Man oh MAN! Plus "Looking for a Love" the soul cover and every other song on here is a bonafide CUT!! This record, and yes, their first are musts for ANY fan of rockin R&B! Fans of new bands like the DELTA 72 and the MAKE UP need look no further for inspiration. Take off yer shoes, open those bottles and dance around the hotel room until you destroy it, just like on the album cover...

5.0 out of 5 stars A rock and roll classic!, September 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Morning After (Audio CD)
The Morning After, along with the first J Geils Band album, are among the finest LP's in my collection. I learned to play the Blues Harp listening to Majic Dick play Whammer Jammer. This is a great party album. The J Geils Band offered an incredible amount of energy on this album and it is one that will make you feel happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best J. geils, November 4, 2011
This review is from: The Morning After (Vinyl)
--this is absolutely, without a doubt, the best j. geils--and one of the best r&b albums of ALL TIME! Isn't the fact that everyone has rated this a 5 stars enough to convince you? The absolutely best cut on the cd--worth every penny alone--is So Sharp--a tune written and performed by an obscure R&B musician and his group (Dyke and the Blazers), not to mention such great tunes as "The Usual Place," "I'm Lookin' For Love," and every other cut on this cd. It is powerful, manic, ass-kicking, irresistiblly original and sincere R&B, the antithesis of the grossly (later) commercial side to J. Geils. Geils on lead guitar is truly remarkable on some of the licks and Wolf is at his best with Magic Dick riviling some of the earlier blues masters on the harp. If you have never heard of this band, have reservations about them, haven't listened to these cuts (and only their pathetic top 40 tunes--Centerfold--ugh!), I highly recommend this as one of the best. Buy it! Love it! And groove!

5.0 out of 5 stars ROCK AND ROLL PARTY!, June 6, 2011
This review is from: The Morning After (Vinyl)

It's always cool to spin some records at a party. Especially when they are just straight up cool records like this THE MORNING AFTER the second album by J. Geils Band.

These guys still had it goin solid with this bit. A studio rock and blues showcase, with a heavy emphasis on keeping it sleazy and raw. I like to spin side two first, with LOOKIN FOR A LOVE, the bands first big single heading it off, making its wayy into the ballady but gritty CRY ONE MORE TIME. These first few tracks prove better on vinyl, for that fuzzy tone. FLOYDS HOTEL is a campy bit but leads into the very cool rock stew of IT AINT WHAT YOU DO...

Flip to side one next and the tunes keep coming. WHAMMER JAMMER is that mouth harp romper that you may hear occasionally on the radio, probably centerpieces the side, but all in all this is typical of all early J. Geils albums of the seventies. Each one is a solid slice of a rock band giving us a great show... a killer 45 minutes of rock and roll. This being one of their most satisfying.

I've been waiting for the digital remasters of the greatest live band of the 1970s. Most people know The J. Geils Band only from hearing the tepid "Centerfold" on classic rock stations. "The Morning After" is their second studio release and shows a band in firm control of their sound and direction.

It is a delight hearing Peter Wolf's vocals and J. Geil's restrained guitar, which goes right through you on "Cry One More Time."

An all-time favorite vinyl of mine is now on CD with full sound. I'm not reliving the past. I am living with timeless blues rock!

5.0 out of 5 stars Going Back to The Morning After, March 23, 2009
This review is from: Morning After (Audio CD)
I bought the vinyl album waaay back when i was a teenager. I decided to treat myself to the CD for my birthday. Man... it took me back to when I first heard it and played it incessantly. It still sounds as fresh as it did when it was first released. The musicianship, the vocals, the sheer fun and bluesy rock is as kicking now as it was then. My personal favorites remain "Floyd's Hotel", Looking For a Love" and "It Ain't What you do". It also makes me wish they never broke up after they received mass commercial success.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Party Band Ever, January 25, 2008
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Morning After (Audio CD)
As a sequel to their first self-titled album "The J. Geils Band", "The Morning After" builds on the raw energy, great interplay between the keyboards, lead guitar and mouth harp, and Peter Wolf's fantastic vocals, with a tantalizing hint of how great their live shows were in the early to mid-70's before their subsequent over produced albums. "Looking for a Love" made it on the charts, but there was more to The J. Geils Band and The Morning After is proof. This band was made for playing smokey, dark, airless blues clubs long into the wee hours of the morning. So, put this in your player, crank it up, and ROCK. You won't be disappointed.

This is second of the first 2 records that I know they did.
This was when they were a REAL band. The first is great also. (J. Geils Band, J. Geils Band) Not the sell out crap you would here later.
Most swell.
