5.0 out of 5 stars Finally - the edition we've been waiting for
As far as devotions go, Morning and Evening is (in my opinion) the best. It is theological as well as pastoral. You can see Charles Spurgeon's great pastoral heart come out on each section as he shows the glory of Christ through the Bible and implores those who do not know him to seek Christ at this present moment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Love Spurgeon, but didn't want a devotional by Alistair Begg
I have been reading Morning and Evening since I was a young teenager and have come to treasure the truths of Scripture through the works of Spurgeon. One of Spurgeons's great gifts is his skill with the English language, his word pictures have made me weep on several occasions. I believe in the revision Begg has taken that away. The truths of Scripture are still there, so...

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally - the edition we've been waiting for, March 26, 2008

This review is from: Morning by Morning and Evening by Evening: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on the ESV Bible (Paperback)

This isn't a devotional that focus on the "easy" verses. It takes the entire Bible as its canvas and works out using some obscure areas to drive home points I wouldn't have seen on first glance.

This edition is even better - splitting the two up (so, from what I assume you keep Evening by Evening at your bed side table - and take Morning by Morning with you) into two nice small editions. They are made with that DuoTone material which comes off very nice in blue (morning) and white (evening). They feel good to the hands and having a bookmark in each is stellar. I find myself reading this more because I am reading two separate books, so I am not always concerned about follow along perfectly.

If you need a devotion, I can't recommend any one more than this and with the edition of the ESV (one of the most readable and poetic translations) you can't go wrong. I can't recommend this one enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Morning by Morning, June 2, 2008

I received this book as a present, which prompted me to purchase two copies to give to friends. This book is a "must" for anyone who is interested in morning Devotionals. So many times something will happen during the day that was addressed that morning. Spurgeon is simply wonderful. Purchase with confidence, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not leather, but excellent, April 18, 2009

This review is from: Morning by Morning and Evening by Evening: A New Edition of the Classic Devotional Based on the ESV Bible (Paperback)
First, be aware that these books are not leather-bound. They are Tru-Tone, the stuff of the new CrossWay bibles, which I happen to like. Very durable with gilded/silver edges. The print is lovely and the size is perfect. I'm thoroughly pleased and have not found errors in the print, unlike some other versions of M&E.

This is the best devotional, and some of the best practical writing, I have ever come across, and I read quite a bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small Book Big Treasure, June 20, 2011

I was hesitant to buy this devotional book because I hadn't actually seen one in my local bookstore. Guess what--I absolutely love this edition of "Morning by Morning." I've added this little book to my morning routine and find that even though it's based on Spurgeon's teachings over a hundred years ago it addresses topics that are applicable to my daily life. The "format" for this edition says "Paperback" but that doesn't adequately describe this book. The cover is absolutely beautiful--the font is easy to read--the color and weight of the paper is very nice--and I love the ribbon page marker. It has the appearance of a handed-down family treasure and this small book has become a treasure to me. I would recommend this book to anyone searching for a devotional book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Love Spurgeon, but didn't want a devotional by Alistair Begg, December 17, 2010
The truths of Scripture are still there, so I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good devotional, but it lacks the power of Spurgeon and I was disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a surprise!, August 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I always love discovering a new author I enjoy! I have known of Spurgeon for many years, but never really checked out any of his work. What's more, I have never really been one for devotional books. It's just not my thing. Most books in this genre are so trite, in my opinion. However, this little volume has surprised me on both fronts. Mr. Spurgeon offers some of the most refreshing, challenging, and inspiring insights I have ever encountered. And I don't mean inspiring like hearing the Sunday choir on a church day. What I mean is that his essays remind me of incredible truths about our wonderful Savior that I may have forgotten through neglect. My heart is genuinely stirred to worship with every essay I read; and that is something we all need in our lives! More than that, I am motivated to draw nearer to my Savior and serve others more for love of Him - to toss aside all of my worldly affections. How wonderful He has been to us!

The editors of this edition have done a wonderful job updating the idiom. I find this version much superior to the others on Amazon. I suggest you take time to use the "See Inside" features for the various versions. I believe you will find this version worth the extra money.
